JANUARY

January 3rd: Show #1201:  Barry travels back in time to the historic Terrace Inn in the heart of BAYVIEW, Michigan near Petoskey.  Here Inn Keepers, Tom and Denis Erhart, transport their guests back to the turn of the century with a Victorian theme.  As a local dulcimer player performs period music we’re treated to a lunch on the porch . The entree a delicious “planked” Lake Michigan Whitefish.

Then Dell takes us to MICHIGAN BRAND MEATS OF BAY CITY. President Tom Krawczak and Vice President Mike Grillo give us a guided tour of the plant operations and discuss the future of the company that has become a household name synonymous with high quality and flavor.

 January 10th: SHOW #1202:  Dell travels to JACKSON, Michigan where he visits with world renowned dog sled maker Frank Hall.  We follow the sled making process from the cutting of the tree to the completed product and learn why Michigan is the world leader in the making of dog sleds.

 Then Barry visits with The Backwoods Carver Neil Ricketts of COMINS, Michigan. We witness the incredible talent of this self taught carver in creating detailed renderings of Michigan birds!

 January 17th: SHOW #1203:  Barry returns to the home of Mrs. Neil Ricketts of COMINS to learn more about her artistic expressions in basket weaving utilizing deer antlers !

 Then Dell travels to CADILLAC to the home of former Michigan Out-of-Doors host Bob Garner. Dell, the Michigan Magazine crew, along with CMU Public Television Personality Tom Endres and others Join Bob for an out door barbecue featuring deep fried whole turkey,  barbecued venison loins, and grilled Walleye “cheeks”.

 January 24th: SHOW #1204:  Dell takes us back to Nettie Bay Lodge near HAWKS, MI.  as we join owner Mark Schuller for a class on “fly rod making” featuring world class instructors.

 Then Barry takes us into the kitchen of Diana Erickson of MIO.  Diana, prepares for the Michigan Magazine crew some far eastern entrees!

 January 31st: SHOW #1205:  It’s off to the U.P. to Manistique where we visit with a former U.S. Diplomatic Courier and author Robert J. La Plante.  Robert reviews his new book with us “THE TEN MILLION MILE MAN” which chronicles his exciting  life as a courier!

 Then Dell travels to GOGEBIC and CROOKED LAKE for a bit of relaxation and fishing with Tom and Penny Endres of CMU Public Broadcasting. NOVEMBER

FEBRUARY

Then Barry travels to GRAYLING and steps back in time to a fifties soda fountain-restaurant called The Family Circle Restaurant.  Here owner Steve Stevens shares his inspiration for creating this unique family operation then whips up delicious old fashioned sodas, banana splits and hot fudge sundaes for the Michigan Magazine crew while “oldies but goodies” play on the juke box and waitress with poodle skirts serves the smiling customers! February 14th: SHOW #1207:  Barry returns to The Quilted Giraffe in MIDLAND to talk more with the quilting volunteers donating their talents to the southwest chapter of  PROJECT LINUS.  (Judy Harris: (517) 631-2026 )

Then Dell Travels to the work shop of Dan and Nettie Hall just North of GRAND RAPIDS . Here the Halls construct world class dog sleds used by top names in the world of Dog Sled racing! (517) 782-1786

February 21st: SHOW #1208:   The Michigan Magazine crew travels into the Upper Peninsula community of CALUMET to visit with an incredible glass blowing artist!  Dell visits “Albion Station” the home of “Lake Superior Glass Works” and glass artist Richard Dana!  Richard’s inspiration and imagination are directly  influenced by the mystical beauty of Lake Superior and the history of the Keweenaw! Then Barry visits LARIUM Michigan located adjacent to Calumet.  Here in the wee early morning hours we stop by “Toni’s Country Kitchen”.    At Toni’s  we taste some of the UP’s best tasting pasties while learning more about the fascinating UP History from restaurant Chef and owner Erick Frimodig. February 28th: SHOW #1209:  Dell and Michigan Magazine continues there UP journey with a stop at wood artist Bill Wiard of “Sundowner Designs”. From the woods of CALUMET Bill turns wonderful bowels and specialty wood designs!  PH:(906) 337-5066

March 7th: SHOW #1210:  Dell and Barry take us on a journey to Lake

Superior’s Crown Jewel....ISLE ROYALE.  In this the first in a series of programs

the Michigan Magazine crew departs Copper Harbor aboard the ISLE ROYALE

QUEEN to begin their adventures.... landing at Rock Harbor for Day One!

March 14th: SHOW #1211:   Barry visits with outdoor naturalist and writer Jim Miller of Northeastern Lower Michigan.  We visit with Jim as he explains and demonstrates to an area school group the advantages of Michigan’s great outdoors.  We travel into the Michigan wilderness where Jim’s demonstrations include creating a dwelling out of underbrush and rubbing two sticks together to make fire!

 

Then we join Dell to the Upper Peninsula ghost town of OLD VICTORIA during their annual restoration fund-raiser.  Hundreds of people from around the country converge on this turn of the century mining town to get a feel of what it may have been like living as a minor during the town’s “hay days”.  Period food and music highlight this once a year event!

 

March 21st: SHOW #1212:  Dell visits with “coffin maker” Craig Convissor of ALTO , Michigan.  Craig creates from scratch, custom made, hand carved and constructed wooden coffins.  At his studio, just east of Grand Rapids, Dell talks with Craig about his craft and about some surprising funeral and burial practices that Michigan law allows and those it doesn’t.

 

Then Barry travels to OWOSSO for a tour of the historic “CURWOOD CASTLE”.  Here world renowned author and conservationist James Oliver Curwood penned some of his greatest works until his death in 1927.  While touring this national historic site Barry talks with Curwood historian Ivan A. Conger about the life and times of one of American’s greatest adventure writers!

 

March 28th: SHOW #1213:   Barry visits with Ophthalmologist Dr. F.K. April 4th: SHOW #1214:  Dell, Barry and the Michigan Magazine crew  continue their journey and island adventures on Lake Superior’s  crown jewel ISLE ROYALE.

 

April 11th: SHOW #1215:  Michigan Magazine travels back to the summer of 2000 as we feature highlights of our annual arts and crafts show, EXPO 2000!  Nearly 30,000 spectators converged on the grounds of the Michigan Magazine Museum in COMINS to meet some of Michigan’s best artists and craftspeople. Many of them have been featured guests of Dell and Barry on past shows!

 

April 18th: SHOW #1216:  Dell travels to HARTLAND and visits the husband and wife business team of KIZCAM productions.  Here owner Dan Maczik demonstrates the new technology in the world of specialty printing.  From hats, and sweatshirts to “lifesize” “Dell and Barry”  stand up posters! May 2nd SHOW #1218: Dell and Barry return to ISLE ROYALE where they continue their tour of Raspberry Island, the Edison Fishery and The historic Rock Harbor Lighthouse....Then climb aboard a charter fishing boat for some late afternoon lake Trout fishing.

May 16th SHOW 1220: Dell travels to the TRAVERSE CITY area to visit with artist Charles H. Gaudette.  Charles and his wife Betty share their home and afternoon with Michigan Magazine as Charles demonstrates his love of sculpture and wonderful water color techniques.  (231) 946-9225

May 23rd SHOW #1221: Barry visits with newspaper publisher and editor George Emerson of a small conservative newspaper called the Review.  Here at the FREDERIC Michigan headquarters we learn what it takes to put out a small home town newspaper. (517) 348-8131

 

Then Dell visits with world renowned Tie Designer Dominic Pangborn of Detroit. Within the walls of his showroom studios we learn of Dominic’s life  philosophy and how he has created a design empire with over 500 tie designs that he markets throughout the world! (313) 259-3400

June 20th SHOW #1225: Barry explores the possibilities that Extraterrestrials are visiting Michigan!  We spend the day with John Shepherd of NORTHWESTERN Lower Michigan who has turned his northern Michigan home into a radio station that beams signals straight up into outer space, in hopes of making contact!  John has gained world wide notoriety for his research, maintaining the belief that we are “not alone” in this universe.

 

The Dell takes us to FREDERICK, Michigan and the world headquarters of  AuSable Woodworking Company, manufacturers of Wood Craft Souvenirs. JULY 4th: SHOW #1227:   Barry visits Northern Forge and Fabrication of CHARLEVOIX.   Here we meet the modern day blacksmithing father and son team of John and Erik Hess.  From their studio forge the old world blacksmithing look is perpetuated by the use of modern day methods.

 

Then Dell travels to ATLANTA to visit with outdoor columnist and author Tom Carney.  Tom’s writings include “NATURAL WONDERS OF MICHIGAN” and “SUN DRENCHED DAYS, TWO BLANKET NIGHTS”.

 

JULY 11TH: SHOW #1228:    Dell  visits the Hinkle Family Bakery in Downtown ATHENS for some wonderful treats.  The Hinkle Bakery has been serving the needs of the local community for generations and still going strong.

 

Barry visits with Darleen Hunt, a Kindergarten/Reading teacher in BATTLE CREEK .  Last year Darleen decided that she would like to create her own books t teach children to read.  The results have been phenomenal!  Her dream has created her own company called “Reading Rock!”    The books are designed around a comfortable farm setting and are quickly teaching children to read in a fun way! JULY 18TH: SHOW #1229:  Barry travels to the IMLAY CITY area to discover the incredible “glass etching” talent of Ed Spiccuzza.   When not etching freighters and other nautical themes into glass murals and mirrors Ed finds himself sailing the great lakes as a sailor on huge freighters where he garners inspiration for his art work.

 

Then Dell visits Grandma Marnie, (Ej Brichan) , of Harmony Candles.  Grandma Marnie has been making gorgeous artistic candles for over a quarter century.  Ej started making candles  one Christmas season when she didn’t have enough money to buy everyone gifts.  The rest is history and now she receives orders for her one of a kind candles from all over the word through her thriving internet business and growing wholesale outlets.  Her studios and headquarters are  located in a barn at her farm in rural ELSIE, Michigan.  http://www.harmonycandles.com

Then Dell travels to CALEDONIA and the Big O Fish House restaurant and smoke house! Here we talk with owners Keith and Lori Osterhaven about their wonderful concept of fresh fish restaurant located adjacent to their fish processing plant!

 

AUGUST 8TH: SHOW #1232:  It’s on the road again with hosts Dell Vaughan and Barry Stutesman as they shar3 wit you more of their favorite stores and places in Michigan off the beaten path. From a place called THE DANCING HIPPO to a wondrous place called DREAMFIELD FARMS and everywhere in between. From great eateries that features mouth watering Perch and Prime Rib to climbing aboard a real World War II submarine, Dell and Barry take on some of their more memorable journeys throughout this Great Lake State.

SEPTEMBER 5TH : SHOW #1236:  Dell visits with Michigan Magazine Curator and Caretaker Professor Nelson Yoder of COMINS.   In part one of a two part series we tour the gardens and learn more about the upkeep of the museum.

 

Then Barry travels to SHELBY, Michigan to visit with Jo and Larry Kelly of the Shelby Gem Factory to preview a new children’s product they have developed called Megalogs.  A kind of modern day version of the popular Lincoln Logs!

SEPTEMBER 12TH: SHOW #1237:   The Michigan Magazine crew travels back into the Eastern U.P. for an update on restoration of, what was at one time, the nation’s most endangered lighthouse…The Crisp Point Lighthouse 11 miles east of Whitefish Point.  We talk with Historical Society founder Nellie Ross about the huge strides made in volunteer involvement and society preservation efforts!

SEPTEMBER 19TH: SHOW #1238:   Dell travels to SHELBY, Michigan to visit with author Betty Phillips.  Betty has compiled and published a book documenting unique cemetery headstones and monuments in Michigan.

 

Then Barry heads to ONAWAY to discover the metal sculpting work of Tom Moran of Moran Iron Works.  Tom and the Company have created huge metal sculptures for fun and profit besides being one of the top independent firms dedicated to industrial repair, fabricating and machining.   On the grounds of the Onaway company one can see a few of Tom’s whimsical creations including a 3 ton 16 foot tall Bald Eagle…and a  2 ton 12 foot tall head of George Washington.

 

AUGUST  26th  : SHOW #1239:   Barry travels to GRAND LEDGE MICHIGAN to learn more about their unique history and Island restoration efforts!

NOVEMBER 7TH SHOW #1245: Barry travels to the  GRAND RAPIDS area to visit "Mouth Stick" artist Will Pardee. Will was left a quadraplegic after a tradgic swimming accidnet a few years back. With faith and the help of his family and friends (especially his wife) Will has become a nationally known sketch artist utilizing his mouth as some one would use thier  hands.

Dell and the Michigan Magazine crew return to Bronner's Christmas  Wonderland in FRANKENMUTH for a visit with Michigan authors and illustrators Colleen and Michael Glenn Monroe of BRIGHTON. NOVEMBER 14TH SHOW #1246: Dell heads into the kitchesn of Debbie Ladd and Diane Vaughan for some wonderful Christmas Recipes! Better have your paper and pencil ready!

Then Barry visits with "One Room School House" historian Bob Kujawa  of Alpena. Bob has traveled throughout Northern Michgian in a quest to  photograph and document still standing, or remnants of, one room schools houses.  Since 1991 Bob has photographed over 200 schools and video taped over 50 of them!

NOVEMBER 21ST SHOW #1247: Barry travels to  SAGINAW to visit with nationally recognized outdoor artist Jim Campbell. After retiring from his advertising agency Jim has created a breath taking line of wild life acrylics.

Then Dell and crew climb aboard the Princess Winonah Riverboat for a "POLKA CRUISE" down the SAGINAW RIVER. After boarding the riverboat at the dock  in down town BAY CITY we meet with Polka Hall of Fame inductee Don "E" Dee and Polka Master John Lipinski to enjoy a wonderful day of Polka music, food and Saginaw River sites!

NOVEMBER 28TH SHOW #1248: Dell travels to CLIO  to witness the wood creations of Mike and Janet Van Buskirk. From miniature log  homes to a variety of lawn ornaments we visit with this husband and wife  crafting teams to learn more about life after retirment.

Then Barry visits with broom maker Lynn Doubblestein of GRAND RAPIDS.  Perpetuting the art and craft of individual broom making Lynn demonstrates the  creative beauty that each broom posseses.

This cottage industry is growing dramatically as they feature their new product called Natural Sandals. DECEMBER 26TH: SHOW #1252: The end of 2001 brings with it a look at some of Dell Vaughan and Barry Stutesman's favorite interviews and visits of the past year. From wonderful artists and crafts people to restaurants and fine food....it was a great year!

Then Dell returns to the Michigan Magazine Museum to continue his visit with museum curator Professor Nelson Yoder.  In this segment we learn of Nelson’s incredible artistry which runs from Author/Philosopher to Oil and Acrylic artist.
