JANUARY
January 5th - SHOW #1101: Dell travels to CALEDONIA and the "Big O Fish House" restaurant and smoke house! Here we talk with owners Keith and Lori Osterhaven about their wonderful concept of a fresh fish restaurant located adjacent to their fish processing plant!
The Barry returns to the "Nautical Mile" of ST. CLAIR SHORES Michigan for a visit to a brand new "Hawaiian style" restaurant called THE WAVES! Here we're treated to delicious tropical dishes in a Polynesian atmosphere.
January 12th - SHOW #1102: Please note: this show is not available for purchase at this time. Barry travels to MACKINAC ISLAND to visit with author David Gurnee. David has written a sequel or "prequel" to the motion picture SOMEWHERE IN TIME. Somewhere in Time was filmed on the Island back in 1979 staring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer. David's hopes are to produce a major motion picture centering around the Memoirs of Elise...the central character in the original presentation. This segment is highlighted by visits to key filming areas of the Island. For more information on David's progress, visit the official "prequel" home page.
Then Dell begins his journey along the coast of Lake Michigan via Jet Skis as we present Part One of THE GRAND TOUR. This 300-mile jet ski endurance run from Mackinaw City along the coast of Lake Michigan to Grand Haven raises funds to benefit the Leader Dogs for the Blind Organization based in Rochester, Michigan
January 19th - SHOW #1103: Dell concludes his journey in the 3rd annual 300 Mile Endurance Jet ski GRAND TOUR. Concluding in SOUTH HAVEN, Michigan with a generous contribution to the Leader Dogs for the Blind Organization.
Barry visits with retired Lighthouse keeper Louis S. Bauchan of CHEBOYGAN. Louis tells tales of his life as a keeper in the United States Lighthouse Service.
January 26th - SHOW #1104: The Michigan Magazine Crew return for part four of their ISLE ROYALE ADVENTURES. Highlights include a charter trout fishing trip....a behind the scenes look and taste of gourmet cooking at the Rock Harbor Lodge....and a visit with Island Naturalists and authors....Rolf and Candy Peterson...Rolf is the author of the book THE WOLVES OF ISLE ROYALE: A Broken Balance.
FEBRUARY
February 2nd - SHOW #1105: Barry returns to WAVES Hawaiian restaurant in ST. CLAIR SHORES for more Polynesian fun, food and music...including personal Hula lessons from authentic Polynesian dancers!
Then Dell takes us through the cheese making process as we visit the Amish Farm Country Cheese House of LAKEVIEW, Michigan.
February 9th: SHOW #1106: Dell visits the Yankee Air Force and the Yankee Air Museum in BELLEVILLE, Michigan. Highlights include a tour of the museum and a ride in the "Yankee Lady" a restored B17 one of America's first "heavy bombers"!
Then Barry visits with Dennis Hale, sole survivor of the shipwreck Daniel J. Morrell. Dennis relates his experience of the November 29th 1966 disaster.
February 16th - SHOW #1107: With the Michigan Magazine Expo 2000 fast approaching the Michigan Magazine crew take a look back at all the fun and excitement of Expo 99!
February 23rd - SHOW #1108: The Michigan Magazine crew continue their look back at Expo 99 with interviews of many of those that took part. Artists and craftspeople from throughout the state converged on the grounds of the MICHIGAN MAGAZINE MUSEUM, June 1999 for two days of festival fun.
MARCH
March 1st - SHOW #1109: Barry travels to SHELBY TOWNSHIP for a visit with author/publisher of THE MICHIGAN CRAFTER magazine, George Walker. George's one of a kind publication is a comprehensive listing of hundreds of arts and crafts shows held each year in Michigan. From his basement office George is filling a growing demand for such a directory!
Then Dell travels to Purdy Field in DUFFIELD, Michigan for the "Michigan Ultralight Association's" annual "fly in". Dell visits with Association President Rob Edmunds and former President Dennis Demeter to discover the growing popularity of Ultralight flying...and even gets his chance to take to the skies in one of the associations crafts!
March 8th - SHOW #1110: Dell travels to COMINS to visit the home of Tonie Lesko. Tonie, along with her family shares with us a traditional Polish Easter dinner!
Then Barry returns to Northwestern Michigan College in TRAVERSE CITY to observe more research results of the study being conducted on the agricultural plant additive Adzsum Plus (Azomite) by college student Jared Milarch.
March 15th - SHOW #1111: Barry travels to the Michigan Magazine Museum in Comins for a back porch "beef steak" barbecue with the folks from "Pampered Beef" products of FAIRVIEW. Pampered Beef products stresses "all natural" feeding of beef cattle to produce a more lean and healthy meat.
Dell travels to BRIGHTON Michigan to talk with Illustrators and Authors of the new children's book BUZZY THE BUMBLE BEE. Michael Glenn Monroe and Denise Brennan-Nelson.
March 22nd - SHOW #1112: Dell continues his visit with authors and illustrators of BUZZY THE BUMBLE BEE, Denise Brennan-Nelson and Michael Glenn Monroe. This segment includes a visit to a Brighton Area third grade elementary class as Denise and Michael present the story of Buzzy the Bumble Bee to them!
Then Barry visits the Selberg Studios of LEONARD Michigan to talk with one of the "world's greatest craftsmen"...... Master Animation Figure Sculptor Tim Selberg! Tim's work can be seen on various network television shows, educational and children's programs and also resides in the collections of several museums and galleries!
March 28th - SHOW #1113: Barry visits Spirit Stone Forge and the blacksmith artistry of Pat Hayes of KALKASKA!
Dell visits with Heather Hughes, Children's book editor of Sleeping Bear Press of CHELSEA, Michigan. Heather takes us on a tour of the nationally known publishing offices that feature some of Michigan's most noteworthy authors! The visit also includes a talk with Publisher Brian Lewis.
APRIL
April 5th - SHOW #1114: Dell visits with world renowned photographers Carl R. Sams II and Jean F. Stoick of MILFORD, Michigan. Authors of IMAGES OF THE WILD...these two incredible Michigan photographers have had their work appear in such publications as National Geographic, Airone, Audubon, and Michigan Natural Resources to name just a few!
Then Barry returns to OSCODA COUNTY and the re-interment funeral services of Civil War Veteran DC Calkins. Calkins whose body was the last soul left behind at an abandoned rural cemetery is finally put to rest in a new cemetery with full Civil War Honors!
April 12th - SHOW #1115: The Michigan Magazine crew continue their retro-look at EXPO 99....Held last year at the Michigan Magazine Museum located midway between FAIRVIEW and COMINS in OSCODA COUNTY. Over 20,000 spectators converged on the museum grounds to meet and visit with over 100 Michigan artists and craftspeople from all corners of the state!
April 19th - SHOW #1116: Dell travels to LESLIE Michigan near Lansing to discover the family owned and operated Lawson's Goodies Bakery! Here we visit with Vickie and Frank Lawson as they prepare wonderful baked goods utilizing natural ingredients and grains from the mid Michigan region.
Barry enters the world of High Powered Model Rocketry as he visits the headquarters of Public Missiles Ltd. in MT. CLEMENS, Michigan! We visit and talk with co-founder Gerry Kolb about the company that has become a leader in the world of high altitude scale model missiles. This segment is highlighted with actual launches at an annual world class rocket meet.
April 26th - SHOW #1117: Barry discovers the wonderful heritage of the historic Croswell Opera House in ADRIAN, Michigan. Michigan's oldest theater!
Dell journeys to IDA, Michigan and the Matthes Evergreen Farm for some family holiday fun! Here we meet the Matthes family and learn of the spirit that has led them into becoming one of the more popular "cut your own Christmas tree" farms in the state. Besides live trees thousands of families each year make their way to the farm for live entertainment...hay rides...tours...a petting zoo...a craft show.....and plenty of good food!
MAY
May 3rd - SHOW #1118: With the Michigan Magazine Museum scheduled to re-open May 25th for the 2000 season. Hosts Dell Vaughan and Barry Stutesman take us on tour of the museum and its "first year" exhibits.
May 10th - SHOW #1119: Over one hundred of Michigan's best artists and crafts people are scheduled to take part in Michigan Magazine's Expo 2000 on the grounds of the Michigan Magazine Museum. Dell and Barry give us a sneak preview of those expected to attend this second expo scheduled for June 24th and 25th at the Michigan Magazine Museum grounds.
May 17th - SHOW #1120: Barry visits the world headquarters of the Organization for Bat Conservation in HASLETT, Michigan. We talk with founder Kim Mies who provides us with close encounters with a wide variety of bats used in their educational programs....from actual Vampire bats to huge Fruit bats.
The family musical tradition is kept alive as Dell welcomes his grandsons, Lee and Ced Vaughan, into the Michigan Magazine studios where they perform an original composition they've written for the upcoming graduating class of Y2K!
May 24th - SHOW #1121: The Michigan Magazine crew return to Lake Superior's crown jewel, Isle Royale , for part 5 of their 1999 journey. Highlights include an encounter with island moose, fox and an array of unique wildflowers.
May 31st - SHOW #1122: Barry visits with artists Larry and Barb Leverenz of CASCO, Michigan. The Leverenz's are known for their wonderful maritime art of Lighthouses and freighters on hats and clothing.
Dell visits the Marquette Mission Park and Museum of Ojibwa Culture in ST. IGNACE , Michigan. Here we visit with native American artist and historian Ron Panquin.
JUNE
June 7th - SHOW #1123: This week we head back to the Michigan Magazine Museum Kitchen for some great selections from our "Cook Book Number 2"
Dell welcomes museum designer Reuel Detweiler of Fairview into the kitchen to prepare his famous "Monster Cookie" Recipe....
Then Barry welcomes CMU Public Broadcasting Personality Tom Endres into the kitchen to prepare his family recipe of "Chop Suey Bake".
June 14th - SHOW #1124: Barry visits with the author of obscure "true life" great lakes maritime adventures Wes Oleszewski of SAGINAW. Wes is a licensed full time commercial pilot who finds his "off" time devoted to his love of writing, resulting in the publishing of regionally popular titles such as: "Mysteries and Histories, Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes"..."Ghost Ships, Gales and Forgotten Tales"....."Ice Water Museum"...and "Stormy Seas" to name a very few.
Then we travel with Dell to RAY, Michigan to visit with another outstanding author and photographer Mary Keithan. Mary's book "Michigan's Heritage Barns" documents through incredible black and white photography many of Michigan's oldest standing family barns!
June 21st - SHOW #1125: Dell travels to ELWELL, Michigan to the home of crafters Frank and Pam Fuller. The Fullers are known throughout the state for their lighthouse and Michigan village renditions "in miniature" carved and painted on boards of Michigan wood.
Barry visits with oil artist Randy L. Hendricks of HOWARD CITY, Michigan. From his home studio Randy creates beautiful wild life renditions that have received "rave" reviews at fine arts shows such as The Wildlife Expo in Orlando, and the Michigan Wildlife Art Festival in Southfield. While visiting with Randy, he takes us on a tour of his home, a restored old one-room schoolhouse.
June 28th - SHOW #1126: Barry travels to KINGSTON, Michigan to visit with another incredible oil artist Ruth Ann Mersino. Ruth's unique "palette knife" technique has garnered national recognition for beauty and technique.
Then we travel behind the scenes with Dell as we feature some very unique stories we've encountered while filming "other" Michigan Magazine segments. Highlights include a trip below the Big Mac bridge into the depths of one of the huge "anchor piers".... A visit with Coast Guard Auxiliary members while filming the PWC Grand Tour...and a talk with a veteran World War II Air Corp combat photographer.
JULY
July 5th - SHOW #1127: Dell discovers a unique and colorful history of WAKEFIELD, Michigan. Michigan Magazine visits the area Historical Museum to visit with area towns people who tell of the proud and fascinating past of one of the Upper Peninsula's western most communities.
Barry travels into the woods of Northern Michigan for a look at the latest forestry technology. We talk with Paul Call of the Michigan Forest Resource Alliance who demonstrates the wonderful new forestry techniques that'll guarantee Michigan as a leader in forestry and reforestation.
July 12th - SHOW #1128: Barry visits stoneware potter Mitch Billiter of ALGER. We visit with Mitch on location in TAWAS CITY, where he just completed a three dimensional wall mural featuring many of his unique stoneware fish.
Dell travels to MIDLAND and the St. Bridgett quilting group where we talk with quilter Judy Harris about the wonderful humanitarian projects area quilters are involved with. Both men and women of all ages...even into their nineties are becoming involved in the time honored tradition of quilting for a good cause!
July 19th - SHOW #1129: Dell returns to the Yankee Air Museum in BELLEVILLE, Michigan for a visit with one of the B17 combat veterans who flew during the aircraft's most active missions.
Then Barry travels to OWOSSO, Michigan to learn more about how the digital age has effected the world of sign making. We slip into the fast past, ever changing technology of Agnew Graphics a family owned sign and promotional company that has kept pace with today's demands for quick high quality signage.
July 26th - SHOW #1130: Barry travels to BELLEVILLE to meet Art and Marcia Perkins. The Perkins are unique artisans that handcraft old west Stage Coach trunks for a growing niche of appreciative customers. Art and Marcia of Perkin's Stage Coach Trunks are nationally recognized as one of a very few crafters still perpetuating the art!
Then Dell travels to MT. PLEASANT, to visit with Mike and Linda Bliss of The Oakridge Kitchens. The Oakridge Kitchens is a family operation specializing in smoke roasted meat products and is known for their traveling Barbecue that provides delicious grilled ribs and chicken for local festivals.
AUGUST
August 2nd - SHOW #1131: Dell travels to ROWES COUNTRY INN near ELLSWORTH. Rowes Country Inn features Michigan foods prepared in a gourmet style. The program is highlighted with the preparation of a delicious Rainbow Trout entree.
Then Barry travels to the Upper Peninsula community of PAULDING to explore one Michigan's unsolved mysteries, THE PAULDING LIGHTS! Here we witness for the first time the actual Paulding Lights that have been unexplainably appearing in the Upper Peninsula nightly for nearly a century!
August 9th - SHOW #1132: Barry travels to FAIRVIEW to ride the AUSABLE VALLEY RAILROAD! This miniature railroad, the brain child of the Schrader family, travels through miles of the Huron Forest to the delight of thousands of passengers each year.
Dell and the Michigan Magazine crew journey into the western U.P. where he visits with WAKEFIELD artist Garland Miller who creates wonderful works of art out of the "burls" of trees....Dell also meets the "LOON RANGER", a man who keeps constant vigil over a nesting Loon...This segment also features some of the wonderful waterfalls of GOGEBIC county!
August 16th - SHOW #1133: It's on the road again with hosts Dell Vaughan and Barry Stutesman as they share with you more of their favorite stories and places in Michigan...off the beaten path! From a place called the DANCING HIPPO to a wondrous place called DREAMFIELD FARM...and everywhere in between..From great eateries that features mouth-watering perch and Prime Rib to climbing aboard a real World War II sub, Dell and Barry take us on over a dozen memorable journeys throughout this Great Lake State!
August 23rd - SHOW #1134: Barry visits with Wayne and Kim Marr of K&W Digital Graphics near FLINT. This husband and wife team have created an interactive CD ROM of 28 Michigan Northern Lower Peninsula Lighthouses. Now from the comfort of a PC one can take a "virtual" journey to some of Michigan's Lighthouses without leaving home!
Then Dell travels to the south shore of LAKE SUPERIOR near MARQUETTE and the hospitality and the Finnish cooking of Judy Smith proprietor of "OUR PARADISE" one of the Upper Peninsula's newest bed and breakfasts! NOVEMBER
November 1st - SHOW #1144: Dell travels to the RIFLE RIVER RECREATION AREA in Northeastern Lower Michigan and talks with Park Manager John Lucas of the State Department Of natural Resources. Here we discover a prime example of one of Michigan's more diverse well kept parks!
Then Barry visits the incredible "Music House" of ACME. Housed here are antique automated music machines from Nickelodeons to Player Pianos!!
November 8th - SHOW #1145: Barry returns to the Quilted Giraffe of MIDLAND to learn more about those who volunteered their quilting talents for Southwestern Michigan's PROJECT LINUS. Dozens of area quilters of all ages converged on the quilting supplies store to fill a desperate need for "security quilts and blankets" in the Southwestern Michigan area.
Dell returns for an update on The Silver Saw of ROSE CITY. Here at the Silver Saw hand made wooden furniture is created to become "heirlooms" of the future.
November 15th - SHOW #1146: Dell and the Michigan Magazine crew return to BRONNER'S CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND in FRANKENMUTH for a visit with Michigan Authors and Illustrators Colleen and Michael Glenn Monroe. Colleen and Michael have just released a new children's Christmas Book titled A WISH TO BE A CHRISTMAS TREE.
Then we travel with Barry to ROCKFORD, Michigan and a visit to HERMAN'S BOY...The home of freshly roasted and ground gourmet coffees from around the world. We step back in time as we enter the old general store atmosphere for a visit with the Havemeier family and also discover their wonderful Bakery, and Confectionery!
November 22nd - SHOW #1147: Barry visits Northern Forge & Fabrication of CHARLEVOIX. Here we meet the modern day blacksmithing father and son team of John and Erik Hess. From their studio forge the old world blacksmithing look is perpetuated by the use of modern day methods.
Then Dell heads into the kitchens of Debbie Ladd and Diane Vaughan for some wonderful Christmas Recipes!
November 29th - SHOW #1148: Dell travels to the PETOSKEY waterfront and the Little Traverse Historical Museum for a visit with museum manager Candice Eaton. Here we discover the wonderful dedication of the area historical society to perpetuate area history and we also are introduced to Native American "beading" by artists Daniel and Janada Chingwa...who we will be featuring on upcoming show #1150.
Then Barry ventures to the SANFORD LAKE area of northern Michigan to visit with Christian recording artist/Computer Consultant and now "Cross Maker" John Harnick. John shares his unique testimony of a hectic lifestyle being drawn into making simple crosses that are being circulated throughout the country! DECEMBER
December 6th - SHOW#1149: Barry visits SPARR, Michigan near Gaylord, the home of Ethel Hicks' miniature dolls called "Angel Children". Ethel has created a world wide mail order market for her fine hand crafted "dolls of dolls" ...painstakingly hand-crafted one by one...these dolls are all original ceramic creations!
Dell travels to MONTROSE, Michigan where Grandma Rita Winter shares with us her recipes for Donuts...Apple Pie and hot Apple Cider!
December 13th - SHOW #1150:Dell visits with Native American Bead Artist Dan Chingwa and his wife Janada of PETOSKEY. At the local historical museum Dan demonstrates his native art utilizing his unique family method handed down generations.
Then Barry travels to ORION TOWNSHIP, Michigan and visits author Ernest Baker of the advertising agency BBDO. Ernest shares with us his pioneering life in the Michigan and international advertising business through his book "A 50 Year Adventure in the Advertising Business"
December 20th - SHOW #1151: Barry Visits Mary Lou Baker of ORION TOWNSHIP , Michigan. Mary Lou, full-time nurse..part-time artist...has captured Michigan on canvas and has gained regional recognition for her wonderful renditions.
Then Dell travels to EAST LANSING to discover the candy making expertise of Lenny Cusenza. At Lenny's candy making shop called "How Sweet It Is!" we experience an unusual and unique array of goodies!
December 27th - SHOW #1152: Dell and Barry recap some of their favorite shows of the past year 2000!
