JANUARY 1998
First Week in January - SHOW #905: Dell continues his visit at the Northwoods Scout Reservation near Lupton, Michigan. In this final segment of the two part series we discover more about the Michigan International Camporee that drew Scouts from throughout the world last summer to this northern Michigan retreat.
Barry takes us into Northwestern Lower Michigan to visit with crafter John VanValkenburgh and his wife. The VanValkenburghs are gaining recognition for their beautiful hand painted lamp shades that depict the Northern Michigan Wilderness.
First full week in January (7th through 13th) - SHOW #906: Barry visits Don Campbell of Gaylord. Don creates amazing detailed farm machinery in miniature. So detailed are his renditions, serious collectors are beating a path to his door for advance orders.
Dell travels to Lupton, Michigan and meets Sally Horton a "pinecone" artist. Sally creates beautiful wild life sculptures from the pinecones of area evergreens.
Second week in January (14th through 20th) - SHOW #907: Dell travels to Dearborn to visit Jack Derrig, "The Irish Baker". Here Jack and crew whip up a delicious Irish breakfast for the Michigan Magazine crew.
Barry heads to the rolling hills of Northwestern Lower Michigan near Boyne City for the harvesting of Ginseng and Goldenseal at Aspen Hill Farms. From planting to harvesting, owner Steve Edwards takes us through the processing of these valuable Herbs.
Third week in January (21st - 27th) - SHOW #908: Barry travels to Fairview to ride the "Ausable Valley Railroad". This miniature railroad, the brain child of the Schrader Family, travels through miles of the Huron Forest to the delight of hundreds of passengers each year.
Dell takes to the waters of Lake Michigan for a bit of sailing with sailing enthusiasts, Public Broadcasting Personalities Tom Hunt of CMU-TV and Dave Dean of the PBS series the "The Boat Shop".
FEBRUARY
Fourth week in January/First week in February (Jan 28th - February 6th) - SHOW #909: Dell visits the art class of instructor Ray Villafane of Bellaire High School. Here we watch as Mr. Villafane instructs his students in the art of "Pumpkin Carving"...an art the class has taken to new heights.
Barry discovers a new Michigan product that the physically challenged will find new life with. It's the Standing Wheel Chair.... Developed and manufactured by a Saginaw based firm. It allows the wheelchair bound to easily assume a standing position with comfort and security.
First Week in February - SHOW #910: Barry lets the chips fly as he visits with chainsaw sculpting artist Ken Schalau of OGEMAW COUNTY.
Then Dell ventures into the UP to BRIMLEY and the "Mushroom Cap Studio". Here Detroit born artist Mary Coesens Demroske creates breathtaking renditions of great lakes freighters and tugs. Mary's works have been displayed in one person and combined shows throughout Michigan including the Dossin Great Lakes Museum in Detroit.
Second Week in February - SHOW #911: Dell travels to INDIAN RIVER and the "Little Sturgeon River Woodshop". Here we discover the amazing talents of Daryl and Phyllis Freed as they create from the woods of Michigan beautiful "Boat" tables.
Then Barry travels to a small family bakery in MEARS Michigan. Here Owner/bakers, Dan and Jane Morat , run the "Old Tiffany Bake Shop" a shop....baking delicious breads and award winning pies to a growing clientele which includes a thriving "mail order" business.
Third Week in February - SHOW #912: The Michigan Magazine Crew heads to the annual "Garlic Cookoff" sponsored by COLEMAN radio station WPRJ. Barry visits with station manager Gary Bugh. We're also treated to a special cooking demonstration by station personnel. Then Barry and Dell help judge over a dozen creative entrants from the Mid-Michigan area.... all using the key ingredient...Garlic.
Then Dell travels to ROSCOMMON to the Michigan Forest Fire Experiment Station. Here Engineer Brian Hutchins shares the unique developments in the science of Firefighting and just how vital the Roscommon station is to the rest of the country.
Fourth Week in February - SHOW #913: Dell continues his visit to the Michigan Forest Fire Experiment Station in ROSCOMMON as he heads into the field along with other fire fighters from around the Midwest to see in action some of the latest firefighting equipment.
Barry heads to ROGERS CITY and the famous "Plaths Meat" processing company. We visit during the busy Christmas season as truckloads of the famous delicious meats are packed and sent throughout the US in time for the holidays. Plath's Meats have become a tradition for families around the US since the early part of this century.
MARCH
First Week in March - SHOW #914: Barry visits SPARR Michigan near Gaylord the home of Ethel Hicks Miniature dolls. Ethel has created a world wide mail order market for her fine hand crafted miniature ceramic dolls. Painstakingly handcrafted one by one these dolls are all original creations.
Then Dell takes us to the 14th annual "Art On The Beach" arts and craft show at the Oscoda Beach Park in OSCODA. We talk with event director Joan Ryan while dozens of artists and craftspeople display their work on the shores of Lake Huron.
Second Week in March - SHOW #915: The Michigan Magazine crew take us on a whirlwind tour of some of their favorite places. From artists and crafts people to unique places and wonderful restaurants. Dell and Barry take us to all corners of the state as they demonstrate just how vast and fascinating a state this is.
Third Week in March - SHOW #916: Barry and the Michigan Magazine crew travel to the south western part of the state to NEW BUFFALO where we stop by "Michigan Tyme", a Michigan gourmet food specialty shop, featuring all natural Michigan products. Back in the Kitchen Barry is treated to a delicious healthy and fresh broccoli salad with sunflower seeds and raisins......mmmmgood!
Then Dell's sweet tooth takes him to a unique OGEMAW county fudge and candy company called "How Sweet It Is". Dell gets the opportunity to try his hand at whipping up a fresh hot batch of chocolate fudge.......enough for a hundred of his closest friends.
Fourth Week in March - SHOW #917: Dell travels to PONTIAC just a stone's throw from the Silverdome to visit with restaurant owners Chuck and Lorraine Lizana. Here Dell and the Michigan Magazine crew are treated to a taste of soul at "Chuck's Soul Food Restaurant and Catering". The crew fills up on fresh catfish, Louisiana gumbo, jambalaya, and mouth watering barbecued ribs.
Then Barry takes us to GRAND RAPIDS to discover the unique metal artistry of Gretchen Pfleghaar Deems. Through Gretchen's artistic maneuvering of her "Plasma" cutter.......she melts through metal to form one of a kind sculptures.
APRIL
First Week in April - SHOW #918: Barry travels to ROCKFORD Michigan, just north of Grand Rapids to visit with "bead" artist Camilla Tate. Camilla forms beautiful beads from raw glass into one of a kind jewelry.
Dell returns to the studio of Betty Fahselt near TAWAS CITY. Near the shores of Lake Huron Betty creates utilitarian pieces of hand thrown pottery. Both practical and beautiful her works are created not only to be appreciated for their appearance but also for their usefullness.
Second Week in April - SHOW #919: Dell journeys into the Upper Peninsula to the Lake Huron shore community of DETOUR VILLAGE to visit with wood carver Bill Sodders. Bill carves "duck" decoys in the Old World style.
Barry travels to GRAND RAPIDS to visit with expressionist artist Kimberly Angelwood. In Kimberly's work we discover a unique and abiding love for the Great Lakes and it's fickle waters.
Third Week in April - SHOW #920: Barry travels to FREEMONT Michigan and the home of Timothy and Becky Jansma. At his home workshop Timothy handcrafts one of a kind beautiful Violins, Violas and Cellos. Timothy, a graduate of the International School of Violin Making in Cremona, Italy, has constructed hundreds of fine instruments played by some of world's best musicians.
Dell takes us on a journey to the "Silver Saw" in downtown ROSE CITY. Here master woodcrafter Rich Pavlik constructs beautiful furniture by hand. From dinning tables to China hutches Rich's intentions are to create family "heirlooms" that will last for several generations.
Fourth Week in April - SHOW #921: Dell and Barry take part in the Great Sauk Trail Council "Soar Like An Eagle" Pow Wow in SALINE Michigan. Here scout leaders from throughout the district come together to share and gather leadership ideas for their home troops. In our visit Dell leads the gathering in the singing of Soar Like an Eagle and Barry gets some quick wilderness cooking tips.
Fifth Week in April - SHOW #922: Barry travels to OTSEGO Michigan to visit the "Lauck Pipe Organ Company". Owner James Lauck takes us on a tour and shows us how these beautiful yet mammoth instruments are constructed for churches and stadiums.
Then it's off to HOLLAND to visit Magna Dyne products, makers of the "Northport Nailer" lure. Dell discovers how this popular line of fishing lure is manufactured and distributed throughout the U.S. to anxious fishermen.
MAY
First Week in May - Show #923: Dell visits the ROSE CITY Greenhouse to talk with owners Roman and Grace VanThomme. Here we learn more about the behind the scenes workings of one of Northern Michigan's largest family owned greenhouses.
Then Barry heads south to WYANDOTTE, Michigan and the "Sharon Sims Studio". We visit with Sharon and discover the inspiration behind her unique "Micro Sculptures" and reliefs
Second Week in May - SHOW #924: Barry heads into Northwestern Lower Michigan into the community of LELAND. Here we visit with former Detroit Television news anchor Bob Pisor. After retiring from WDIV, Bob headed North to open up a unique organic bakery called STONE HOUSE BREAD. Bob and his staff of professional bakers feature only the freshest organic breads to a growing number of health conscious clientele.
Then Dell heads back to Chuck's Soul Food restaurant near PONTIAC where Co-Owner Lorraine Lizana shares her rich delicious "made from scratch" Banana Pudding recipe!
Third Week in May - SHOW #925: Dell heads to HARRISON and another one of Michigan's new fine family restaurants called Pepperoncini's. Here Chef Jason Funnel whips up some delicious chicken kabobs roasted over an open flame.
Barry continues his tour of Northwestern lower Michigan by visiting with talented glass blowers, Gail and Jim Leone of CEDAR. Former Birmingham Michigan residents, the couple moved north into this inspirational section of the state less than 2 years ago. Here at their newly constructed studios we witness some incredible glass blowing of delicate Christmas ornaments.
Fourth Week in May - SHOW #926: Barry continues his northwestern Michigan journey into beautiful SUTTONS BAY , Michigan by visiting a quaint little turn of the century shop called "Hats and Haberdashery". Here "Hat Maker" Cynthia Koeze displays her unique talent of creating the right hat for every special occasion!
Dell travels to DEFORD to meet with craftsman/artist, Joe Hillaker, who goes by the name of "Joe of Deford". Joe crafts, with the help of his wife Becky, beautiful lodge furniture and wood sculptures from logs and branches he collects from the woods of Michigan's "Thumb" area.
JUNE
First Week In June - SHOW #927: Dell returns to OCQUEOC Michigan and the Dancing Hippopotamus...one of the state's oldest arts and crafts shows. We visit with crafters and event founder Lilien Foster.
Barry Climbs aboard the 1/4 scale Michigan AuSable Valley Railroad near FAIRVIEW to enjoy a 20-minute relaxing, scenic tour through northern Michigan wilderness. We talk with owners Howard and Joanne Schrader to discover how this hobby has become a unique full time business.
Second Week In June - SHOW #928: Barry visits the Carousel Factory in downtown SAGINAW to learn of the organization's efforts to build a 32-foot musical carousel for the children of Michigan to be constructed at the Saginaw Children's Zoo. Dozens of Woodcarvers from throughout the state are donating their efforts in creating Michigan's only locally handcrafted musical carousel.
Dell travels to BURTON Michigan to learn of the metal "spinning" talents of Tom Pierson. Tom Spins Pewter, Copper and Brass into bowls, vases and cups of remarkable quality and beauty.
Third Week in June - SHOW #929: Dell Travels to SAULT STE MARIE and the studios of Master World-Class fish taxidermist Randall Desormeau. Randall not only is a master of traditional taxidermist's techniques but also has developed a reproduction process that allows fishermen to display their prize catches in "fiberglass'.
Barry continues his trip in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a visit to the studios and gallery of Heerspink and Porter Pottery of CEDARVILLE, Michigan. This husband and wife team fire their pottery in a brick kiln fueled by wood. The raw clay is exposed to the direct action of the fire and smoke which gives each piece it's own individual character.
Fourth Week in June - SHOW#930: In this special edition of Michigan Magazine Dell and Barry take us on a tour of the new Michigan Magazine Museum near COMINS before the big 4th of July Grand Opening! This preview highlights the many volunteers who made the dream come true. Also highlighted will be other area attractions within a few short miles of the museum including The AuSable Valley Miniature Railroad, Stieners Pioneer Museum, The End Of The Line Caboose Museum, The Coca-Cola Bottle Cap Museum, and the Norwoods Gallery.
JULY
FIRST WEEK IN JULY - SHOW#931: Dell returns to INDIAN RIVER and the "Little Sturgeon River Woodshop". Here we discover the amazing talents of Daryl and Phyllis Freed as they create from the woods of Michigan beautiful "boat" tables.
Barry returns to CEDARVILLE for a stop at the stained glass studios of David Altmaier.
SECOND WEEK IN JULY - SHOW #932: Barry travels to GRAYLING to witness the Pen and Ink artistry of Daniel Feldhauser. From his rural northern Michigan home, Daniel creates limited edition prints utilizing various mediums including granite!
Dell travels back into the UP with another visit to CEDARVILLE. Here we discover the blacksmithing talents of Randy Dunn. Randy has turned his craft into an art with custom ornamental metal work, blacksmithing and welding.
THIRD WEEK IN JULY - SHOW #933: On this edition Dell and Barry visit with a couple of talented and philanthropic northern Michigan Quilters. First we visit with FAIRVIEW quilter Donna Esch. Donna's beautiful hand quilted masterpieces are all donated to the World Relief Organization that holds annual auctions throughout the US including Fairview to provide monies to support food and clothing distributions to the needy in the US and third world countries.
Then we travel 9 miles south to MIO and Quilter Inge Mazza. Inge specializes in quilted and patchwork clothing. Inge is also heavily involved in the Michigan Quilt Network. This statewide non-profit organization is dedicated to the advancement of the art of quilting through education, preservation and communication.
FOURTH WEEK IN JULY - SHOW #934: Barry visits with FAIRVIEW woodcrafter Ira Esch. From his home Ira creates beautiful wood products that are all donated to the annual Northern Michigan World Relief Sale. From oak tables to wooden ornaments every item is dedicated for sale to support programs that send food and clothing to needy in the US and third world countries.
Dell travels to MILFORD where we visit, in part one of a two part story, with Carl R. Sams II and Jean F. Stoick, professional wildlife photographers whose pictures have appeared in national and international publications including Airone, National Geographic, Audubon, Michigan Natural Resources and much much more.
FIFTH WEEK IN JULY AND FIRST WEEK IN AUGUST - SHOW #935: Dell continues his visit with world renowned photographers Carl R. Sams II and Jean F. Stoick of MILFORD, Michigan.
Barry travels to GRAYLING and steps back in time to a fifties soda fountain-restaurant called The Family Circle Restaurant. Here owner Steve Stevens shares his inspiration for creating this unique family operation then whips up delicious old fashioned sodas, banana splits and hot fudge sundaes for the Michigan Magazine crew while oldies but goodies plays on the juke box and waitresses with poodle skirts serves the smiling customers!
AUGUST

SECOND WEEK OF AUGUST - SHOW #936: Dell travels to COPPER HARBOR in Michigan's UP to visit with artist Linden Dahlstrom. Through Linden's paintings he attempts to interpret the lakes, woodlands and history of the Lake Superior region.

THIRD WEEK OF AUGUST - SHOW #937: Barry visits with the Toth brothers of HAMBURG Michigan. These two brothers, Ted and Stephen, have been "harvesting" wood from old barns since 1974. Recycling the wood into beautiful new floors, walls and furniture. Collecting the quality wood from Michigan's abandoned barns for over 20 years, the brothers have accumulated it into the state's largest antique lumberyard!
Then Dell visits with Upper Peninsula Author Betty Sodders of DETOUR VILLAGE. Betty is the author of the book "Michigan On Fire". The book chronicles devastating Michigan Forest Fires from 1871 through 1974.
FOURTH WEEK OF AUGUST - SHOW #938: Dell continues his stay in DETOUR VILLAGE to visit with wood carver Bill Sodders. Bill carves "duck" decoys in the Old World style.
Barry visits historic CALUMET in the UP to discover the incredible work of "copper smith" Dave Walli.
SEPTEMBER
First Week in September - SHOW #940: Dell takes us to Clinton Township , Michigan and Coventry Creations. Here candle makers hand create candles made by combining herbs and essential oils. Owners Jackie and Pattie Smith along with sales manager Alan Zielinski explain how the unique candles are gaining in popularity as tools for relaxation and self-affirmation.
Then we head to Ortonville, Michigan as Barry visits with model maker Dick McDonald. Dick's incredible expertise in model making, from scratch, boats and freighters of the Great Lakes has earned him accolades for realism and fine detail.
Second Week in September - SHOW #941: Michigan Magazine makes a return visit to wood burning artist Linda Sales of St. Helen. Linda's incredible talent has been recognized by some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Linda's work includes portraits of Dolly Parton, Michael Landon, Johnny Carson, Emmet Kelly Jr. and now Dell Vaughan and Barry Stutesman. We witness Linda's remarkable talent in action at her St. Helen studio.
The Michigan Magazine crew then heads to visit with the daughter of a Lighthouse Keeper Francis Platske of Kalamazoo, demonstrates her talent of artistry in watercolor. Her inspiration and works of art highlight her many years of living in a Lighthouse on the Great Lakes with her family.
Third Week in September - SHOW #942: Dell takes us to MICHIGAN BRAND MEATS of Bay City. President Tom Krawczak and Vice President Mike Grillo give us a guided tour of the plant operations and discuss the future of the company that has become a household name synonymous with high quality and flavor.
Then Barry visits with Emil Szkipala of Roseville, Michigan. Emil, formerly of Romania, is a world class wood carver and instructor. In our visit at his home studio we learn of his life in Romania and how he escaped the dictatorship and moved to America to become one of Michigan's more well known artistic wood carvers utilizing both chisel and chainsaw!
Fourth Week in September - SHOW #943: Barry visits with the Girl Scouts of the Mio/Fairview troops as they celebrate a milestone in the Girl Scout Movement.
Dell visits with the "Chainsaw Men of Michigan" Ken Bo Shell of Sterling Heights and Emil Szkipala of Roseville as they demonstrate the art of chainsaw sculpting by carving a huge bald eagle that would eventually grace the loft of the new Michigan Magazine Museum!
Last Week in September First Week in October - SHOW #944: Dell travels to Presque Isle Michigan to visit with two women who have turned the love of lighthouses into a fun filled full time business. Ilona Stroupe and Judith Kimball have created Presque Needleworks, a "cross-stitch" business featuring patterns of Great Lakes lighthouses.
Then Barry travels to Oscoda county and the home of Evergreen Log Homes. Here owner Jim Larimer demonstrates his Old World method of constructing "full log" log homes with a high tech slant.
OCTOBER
October 7th - SHOW #945: The Michigan Magazine crew takes us on a tour of the restoration of the Middle Island Lighthouse. Then we go back in time to 1996 for a return visit to the first ever Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival in ALPENA.
October 14th - SHOW #946: Barry travels to the GREENBUSH home of David and Carol Dunn. These two former Californians have developed unique "wine" holders. These two entrepreneurs have created a growing home based business from the holders called "Dunn's Woodworks" that now commands a national market.

October 21st - SHOW #947: Dell heads into the Michigan Magazine Museum Kitchen as museum architect, Reuel Detweiler of FAIRVIEW, shows us how to whip up a batch of "Monster Cookies" for the upcoming holiday seasons.
Then Barry travels to MT. CLEMENS and the home of Divine Heritage Prayer Benches. We visit with founder Dorothy Elbrader who tells us how she was first inspired with the idea of making these handcrafted prayer benches available to everyone.
October 28th - SHOW #948: This time Barry head into the new Michigan Magazine Kitchen with guest Vera Souci Olver of IOSCO county. Vera whips up an old fashioned "vinegar pie" from a recipe taken from a book of her father's life story as a cook called "40 years a 'cookin".
Then Dell takes us to EVART and the Annual Dulcimer Fun Fest. Here Dulcimer players of all sorts from around the country converge for one of the country's largest gatherings of Dulcimer Players and enthusiasts.
NOVEMBER
November 4th - SHOW #949: Dell takes us to the Silver Saw in downtown ROSE CITY to experiences the craftsmanship of woodworking master Rich Pavlik.

November25th - SHOW #952: Barry takes us to CHEBOYGAN to visit with crafter Laura Derk. Laura handcrafts decorative scrolls for Christmas Tree ornaments. Each scroll containing passages of religious text in the spirit of the season. Beginning in her home she is now supplying her ornaments to a world market.
Dell takes us on a journey to visit the world's Largest Stove. Here on the grounds of the State Fair in DETROIT we hear the story of this huge stove and it's restoration back to it's original glory.
DECEMBER

DECEMBER 9th - SHOW #954: Dell and Barry celebrate the Christmas season with a behind the scenes tour of Bronner's Christmas Wonderland of FRANKENMUTH. The Michigan Magazine crew is personally guided by founder Wally Bronner who relates the story of , this, the world's largest Christmas store's beginnings. We also meet many of the talented craftsmen who customize many of the ornaments displayed here. The tour is highlighted by a visit with Santa!
DECEMBER 16th - SHOW #955: Dell takes us into the Michigan Magazine Museum Kitchen to share with us his Mother's delicious Buttermilk Hotcakes and his wife Garneta's wonderful zucchini bread!
Barry takes us to PETOSKEY and the studios of sculptor David Austin. Austin's abstract works have been commissioned throughout the state to blend effortlessly into country as well as urban landscapes.
DECEMBER 23rd - SHOW #956: Sam Labado of ATLANTA'S Dixie Rose Cafe share with Barry a couple of his favorite family recipes in the Michigan Magazine Kitchen.....In part one of this two part segment we learn about a delicious Italian Chicken dish with all the side dishes!
Dell takes us to OAKLEY the site of the Mid-Michigan Old Gas Tractor Association's annual show. Old engine enthusiasts from around the country converge on the grounds to share their love of engine technology yesterday and today.
DECEMBER 30th - SHOW #957: Dell treats us to a trip to POSEN and the bakery craftshop/greenhouse of the Taratutas. Annette and Dennis Taratuta are known far and wide for their delicious homemade baked breads made daily.....unique freeze dried flowers and their unusual display of area arts and crafts.
