JANUARY 1996
January 3rd - SHOW #705: Dell and Barry travel to Northwestern lower Michigan to visit with two Brothers who are very talented artists. Dell talks with Wildlife painter Glen McCune then Barry visits with Photographer Randy McCune. Both artists works are featured on annual Michigan calendars.
January 10th - SHOW #706: Barry travels into Kalamazoo "wine" country as we visit the vineyards of the Steve Kucinich family.
Dell travels to Perry Michigan to visit the beautiful Van Dyke Zinnia gardens. What started out as a hobby for Mickey Van Dyke has grown into a 14 acre flower farm run by her and her husband that is providing high bred flower seeds to a growing national mail order market.
January 17th - SHOW #707: Dell visits the Hessel/Cedarville area of Michigan's eastern U.P. to attend the 18th annual Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Wooden Boat Show.
Barry continues his stay in Kalamazoo's wine country to visit the Peterson and Son's winery. Here we visit with gold medal Wine Master Duane Peterson about his all natural (No Sulfate) wines.
January 24th - SHOW #708: Barry visits with television broadcast engineer Dan Morgan of Rose City . Here we learn of his efforts of establishing one of the nation's "smallest" television stations and cable companies in the late 70s which eventually became one of the inspirations for Michigan Magazine.
Dell visits with Tim Smith and Mark Herrick creators of BUCK WILDER's SMALL FRY FISHING GUIDE.... A unique and colorful fishing guide dedicated to introducing the world of fishing to small fry of all ages.
January 31st - SHOW #709: Dell travels to Comins where he tours the Log cabin building operation of Si Yoder. Si's unique building concept deals with total control of his homes. From trees in the forest to beautifully constructed environmentally conscious spacious log homes.
Barry visits Robert LaCroix and his home business operation called Birchworks. From his home shop Robert creates beautiful birch log candlesticks.
FEBRUARY 1996
February 7th - SHOW #710: Barry visits with "woodburning" artist Linda Sales of St. Helen. Linda is known for her amazing life like renderings of celebrities like Elvis Presley, Michael Landon, Johnny Carson and circus clown Emmet Kelly Jr.
Then Debbie Ladd of Midland shares with Dell her summer time recipes of Tuna salad and her unique Potato salad. From her summer cottage on Lewiston's Twin lake Debbie prepares these two dishes that are perfect for those summer picnics.
February 14th - SHOW #711: Dell, aboard an antique wooden boat, returns to the Les Cheneaux Islands for a tour of this historic chain of 36 islands in northern Lake Huron. While in the area Dell continues his visit to the area's annual antique wooden boat show and art festival in the Hessel and Cedarville area.
Barry travels to the Greenbush home of David and Carol Dunn. These two former Californians have developed unique "wine" holders. These two entrepreneurs have created a growing home business from the holders called "Dunn's Woodworks" that now commands a national market.
February 21st - SHOW #712: Barry travels to Owosso for a tour of historic "Curwood Castle". Here, world renowned author and conservationist James Oliver Curwood penned some of his greatest works until his death in 1927. While touring this national historic site Barry talks with Curwood historian Ivan A. Conger about the life and times of one of America's greatest authors.
Dell visits with "coffinmaker" Craig Convissor of Alto Michigan. Craig creates from scratch, custom made, hand carved and constructed wooden coffins. At his studio, just east of Grand Rapids, Dell talks with Craig about his craft and about some surprising funeral and burial practices that Michigan law allows and those it doesn't.
February 28th - SHOW #713: Dell visits "Thunder Hammer Studio" in Rosebush . This is the home of Mt. Pleasant Saginaw Chippewa Professional Stone Sculptor & Artist Dennis R. Christy. From stone Dennis slowly creates beautiful works of art.
Then Barry travels to Chesaning Michigan to "Tree Hugger Stoneworks". Here another home business is creating their own niche in the art world. Tracy Johnston creates beautiful miniature stone houses and lamps from Michigan materials found along the shores of Torch lake, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. With the assistance of her husband and woodcrafter Wendy Wilcox, Tracy has created what she refers to as an "earth friendly" home accessory line.
March 1996
March 6 - Show #714: Barry visits with the Toth brothers of Hamburg Michigan. These two brothers, Ted and Stephen, have been "harvesting" wood from old barns since 1974. Recycling the wood into beautiful new floors, walls and furniture. Collecting the quality wood from Michigan's abandoned barns for over 20 years the brothers have accumulated it into the state's largest antique lumber yard!
Dell travels to Gladwin to visit with Joe Lathrop. Joe creates hand-crafted, hand painted, rustic "art tables" out of northern Michigan tree stumps. Joe's art work has resulted in the production of several beautiful popular art prints.
March 13th - Show #715: Dell visits a young West Branch craftsman, Kirk Bedtelyon and his wife who have perfected the art of reproducing the beautiful wooden "Hoosier" style home cabinets!
Barry discovers "THE BURGER OF THE FUTURE" when we visit Ray Pleavea of Cedar Michigan. Ray has developed a Hamburger that is 50% leaner than regular Hamburger. "Plevalean", as it's called was awarded Michigan's New Product Of The Year Award. The burger combines 91 per cent lean beef with a natural cherry blend.
March 20th - Show #716: Michigan Magazine visits a unique family run restaurant along Michigan's Lake Superior shoreline near Baraga. Here Barry and Dell discover the fresh Lake Trout and other "House Specialties" at Carla's Restaurant!
Then we make a trip to Reed City where Dell learns more about he history of one of the most popular gospel tunes ever written.....THE OLD RUGGED CROSS. Reed City is the home town of the author, the Rev. George Bennard. Dell talks with historian Don Crocket at the Old Rugged Cross museum. The interview is highlighted with actual tape recorded audio of the Rev. explaining his inspiration behind the hymn....Also featured is a rendition of the tune by Houghton Lake Vocalist Phyllis Anderson.
March 21st - Show #717: Dell visits the Handrich family near Fairview to learn more about "home Schooling" in Michigan. Jane Handrich, the mother of six boys, has been home teaching the boys since the eldest became old enough over ten years ago.
Barry visits the unique Dixie Rose Restaurant in Atlanta. Here owner, Sam and Pam show Barry how some of their house specialties are prepared and Sam gives Barry a quick lesson on how to "throw" a pizza.
APRIL 1996
April 3rd - SHOW #718: Barry travels to the Au Sable Valley retirement home in Fairview Michigan to visit with some very talented senior citizens who are continuing to lead a very active life. From authors to painters and carvers.
Dell visits with Ruth and Clyde Willett of Bad Axe's Pioneer Log village. Here Dell talks about the upcoming tenth anniversary celebration of the Log Cabin Society of Michigan. Ruth tells the history of the village while Clyde demonstrates pioneering black smith techniques.
April 10th - SHOW #719: Dell visits with Bad Axe basket weaver Mary Curtis and unique Port Austin artisan Irv Jorwski who carves peach pits
Meanwhile Barry meets a very talented award winning water color artist Beverly Chase of Oscoda Michigan.
April 17th - SHOW #720: Michigan Magazine travels to East Tawas to view the artistry of T.M. Muchow. This retired Coastguardsman puts brush to canvas to create meticulous renditions of the ships and freighters that have sailed the great lakes.
Dell visits with 99 year old rug hooker Fern Copeland and rug "braider" Mable Temple of Elkton Michigan.
April 24th - SHOW #721: Dell travels on a horse drawn sleigh into the woods of Northeastern Michigan for a look at the elusive Elk followed by a gourmet dinner. This Elk tour/ gourmet dinner package is a unique concept developed by Hillman businessman Jack Mathias and draws dozens of guests each week for a nearly guaranteed close encounter with the majestic northern Michigan Elk.
Barry travels to Shelby Township for a visit with author/ publisher George Walker. George has published a one of it’s kind directory of many of the arts and crafts shows held each year in Michigan. From his basement office George is filling a growing demand for a comprehensive guide to the many arts and crafts shows in Michigan.
MAY 1996
May 1st - SHOW #722: Dell travels to Shelby Michigan to visit THE GEMSTONE FACTORY. We visit with owners Larry and Jo Kelly who tells us of the evolution of their business which creates simulated versions of priceless Gems. The Gemstone Factory produces the greatest variety high quality simulated gems in the world!
Barry visits Old Century Forge in Montigue where weathervanes are mass produced. Here we talk with owner Tom Lougmiller about the weathervane business and view the actual forging process.
May 8th - SHOW #723: Barry visits artists Bernhard Baumgartner and Tima Tierney of Shelby Township Michigan. Bernhard and Tina have created an outlet for their artistic endeavors called SOUTHWEST CORNER. They specialize in creating artificial cactus arrangements. With the input of an interior decorator friend they began ,in their home, to manufacture and decorate Cacti for world wide distribution.
Dell visits with Artist and Singer/Songwriter Lynn Morgan of Gladwin. Lynn has been described as an "artist of American life". His musical compositions are just as breathtaking as the portraits he paints of the life around us. Like the songs he sings each picture creates a mood through a well told story.
May 15th - SHOW #724: Dell travels to the Rifle River Recreation area near Lupton to explore the wonders of Michigan's state parks.
Barry climbs to the very top of the Big Mac Bridge as we explore it's history and majesty.
May 22nd - SHOW #725: Barry travels to Dimondale just south of Lansing to visit the SILVER CREEK MERCANTILE, the home of beautiful hand crafted gifts and unusual decorating ideas. Here we talk to owners Debbie and Steve Viel as they describe their shop and demonstrate the creation of their unique line of pottery.
Then Dell travels next door to the QUILT BARN in downtown Dimondale. Here we talk with owners Nola Haines and Virginia Kitchen about machine pattern quilting and how they made the decision to enter the wonderful world of quilting.
May 29th - SHOW #726: Dell travels to Southfield to take in the 13th anniversary of the MICHIGAN WILDLIFE ART FESTIVAL at the Southfield Pavilion. Here we talk with Executive Director Dennis Fijalkowski about the uniqueness of this wonderful art exposition that draws artists from throughout Canada and U.S. This art festival is designed as an annual benefit for wildlife restoration, designed to raise public consciousness about the needs of wildlife by exhibiting the best wildlife and environmental art from around North America. The festival is widely regarded as the largest in the Midwest!
Barry visits ICT Custom Engineering of Shelby Michigan. Here we learn of the testing and development of a new ATV for the physically challenged. Still just in the prototype development stage we witness the new found freedom this vehicle will provided for the handicapped.
JUNE 1996
June 5th - SHOW #727: Barry travels to the Hose House restaurant in Suttons Bay . Here owner Sam Secson prepares a meal of traditional Greek dishes.
Dell returns to the Traverse Bay area to talk with the creators of BUCK WILDER's SMALL FRY FISHING GUIDE. Authors and Illustrators Tim Smith and Mark Herrick tell us how their love of fishing evolved into the publication of this popular fishing "how to" book for kids.
June 12th - SHOW #728: Dell takes the Michigan Magazine viewers through the process of Producing the Michigan Magazine quarterly magazine.....From editing to the final printing and distribution. The interview is highlighted by a visit to Central Printing of Gaylord where the magazines are printed.
Barry visits the Jesse Besser Museum in Alpena. Here we visit with museum executive director Dennis Bodem who gives us a brief tour of this unique regional museum.
June 19th - SHOW #729: Barry visits glass bead artist Linda Woodruff of Davision Michigan. From her home studios Linda creates, through fire and artistic ability, a rainbow of unusual and beautiful glass beads.
Dell visits with up and coming artist Mike Gottschalk of Lapeer. Mike specializes in capturing on canvas "city scapes" of familiar area scenes. Mike, a former automotive illustrator, finds his experience in "realism" helpful in capturing familiar scenes for posterity
June 26th - SHOW #730: Dell travels to Port Sanilac to visit the "Herbal Pantry". Here two young ladies, Kelly Sherman and Tara Medaugh, are creating, from their home, a unique herbal business.....Highlighted by their own herbs developed into all natural culinary, medicinal and cosmetic products.
Barry visits with singer/songwriter and short story writer Griz Prusik of Port Sanilac . We visit with Griz as he relates to us his inspirations and love of the area's maritime history. The visit is highlighted by Griz performing segments from his new CD titled: GRIZ'S BALLADS OF THE GREAT LAKES.
JULY 1996
July 3rd - SHOW #731: Barry visits with master guitarist, songwriter and recording artist Richard Wagner. Wagner, the recipient of 5 platinum and 13 gold records has written and recorded songs for Alice Cooper, Air Supply, Lou Reed and The Frost to name just a few. Richard announces his plans for "Talent Quest '96"....a search for Michigan's best talent to record on his newly formed label and his Wagner Music Group.
Dell travels to the Flint area to talk with former producer and host of the area's longest running local radio program "The Buick Factory Whistle" radio and television personality, Bill Lamb.
July 10th - SHOW #732: Dell visits the ever popular Chesaning Showboat to learn of it's history and evolution into one of the state's more popular yearly attractions.
Then Barry travels to Hazel Park Michigan to visit with portrait artist Robert Byrd.
July 17th - SHOW #733: Barry visits a turn of the century Victorian mansion in Port Sanilac ...The Loop Harrison house. The house is now the home of the Sanilac county historical society. Here we learn some of the fascinating history of this historic port city.
Dell visits the home of Krueger meats in Alpena. As we're guided through the plant operations we learn of the unique process that is making the company's meat product line one of the State's more popular brands.
July 24th - SHOW #734: Michigan Magazine travels to the Southfield Pavilion where Dell visits with some of North America's most talented outdoor and wildlife artists at the 13th annual Michigan Wildlife Art Festival.
Then Barry travels to Alpena to discover the unique history of the Alpena flour mill.
July 31st - SHOW #735: Barry discovers the unusual Bay View Chair Company. The company located in the old Alpena flour mill is now manufacturing to a world market beautiful wood lawn furniture.
Then Dell travels to Prairieville to visit Michigan's FARMERS HALL OF FAME.
AUGUST 1996
August 7th - SHOW #736: Dell and Barry travel to the Upper Peninsula ghost town of Old Victoria during their annual restoration fund-raiser. Hundreds of people from around the country converge on this turn of the century mining town to get a feel of what it may have been like living as a minor during the towns heydays. Period food and music highlight this once a year event.
Then we travel to Baldwin to visit the fascinating "Shrine Of The Pines". The story of one man's dedication to preserving the memory and heritage of the Great White Pine. We visit with shrine tour director Patricia Sweet.
August 14th - SHOW #737: Barry visits an old world "rug weaver" in Standish . From the rug looms of Glenn Lyons you'll see beautiful rugs painstakingly created by his family and himself.
Dell travels to the Tawas area and the studio of Betty Fahselt. Betty is an accomplished stoneware potter creating beautiful pieces of art that are at the same time practical. Her dinner ware has not only appeared on family dinning tables but also at art galleries and gift shops.
August 21st - SHOW #738: Dell and Barry celebrate the 10th anniversary of Michigan's Log Cabin Day at the Jesse Besser Museum in Alpena. Also highlighted will be two new inductions of the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame.
August 28th - SHOW #739: Barry travels to the Blissfield area to visit Gold Coast Farms. Home of the nation's largest dealer and collector of farm toys and miniatures.
Dell travels to The Farm Country Cheese House. Here we see the cheese making process from the milking of the cows on an Amish farm right through to the packaging and retail sales.
SEPTEMBER 96

September 11th - SHOW #741: Barry visits a children's day care center in West Branch for a visit with Grandma Red. Grandma Red has made it a tradition each year to treat the children to her famous cinnamon rolls. We begin our visit early in the morning at the center's kitchen where we find Grandma Red busily preparing her rolls before the first children begin to arrive.
Dell visits with Ana Lucero of Oscoda County who prepares for us some delicious Mexican entrees...including Pinto beans and hot Tamales.
September 18th - SHOW #742: The Michigan Magazine crew travels into Michigan's beautiful U.P. where Dell discovers the unusual collection of Dick Berger. At Dick's Manistique Michigan home you'll find one of the largest Beer can displays anywhere! Both empty and full cans make up the collection that runs into the thousands.
Then we travel to southwest lower Michigan near the Indiana border to experience the Court Yard Gallery. Here in New Buffalo Michigan Barry talks with gallery owner Gene Halun who takes us on a wonderful tour of this gallery that combines nature with some of the nation's most beautiful fine arts.
September 25th - SHOW #743: We continue our visit to New Buffalo Michigan where Barry stops by Michigan Tyme, a Michigan gourmet food specialty shop, featuring all natural Michigan products. Back in the Kitchen Barry is treated to a delicious healthy and fresh broccoli salad with sunflower seeds and raisins........mmmm goood.
Dell ventures north to Nettie Bay Lodge near Millersburg. Nettie Bay has been a Northern Michigan tradition for over 45 years from controlled hunting expeditions to birdwatching this over 2,000 acres of private land encourages man's involvement with the wilderness around him at the same time maintaining that critical ecological balance between man and wildlife.
OCTOBER 1996

October 9th - SHOW #745: Barry and Dell take us on a whirlwind tour of some of their favorite restaurants in Michigan!
October 16th - SHOW #746: Dell visits Nettie Bay Lodge near Hawks Michigan. In this second part of a two part segment we learn more about their unique program on "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman." This workshop is aimed at helping women learn and gain confidence in outdoor skills.
Barry travels to the Grand Rapids area to visit "Mouth stick" artist Will Pardee. Will was left a quadriplegic after a tragic swimming accident a few years back. With faith and the help of his family and friends (especially his wife) Will has become a nationally known sketch artist utilizing his mouth as some one would use their hands.
October 23rd - SHOW #747: Barry and the Michigan Magazine crew return to Indian River for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Indian River Catholic Shrine.....the home of the world's largest crucifix.
Dell travels to Copper Harbor in Michigan's U.P. to visit with artist Linden Dahlstrom. Through Linden's paintings he attempts to interpret the lakes, woodlands and history of the Lake Superior region.
October 30th - SHOW #748: Dell visits with Michigan Magazine wildlife writer/ adventurer Rick Baetson and his family following their latest trip into Canada's northern reaches.
Barry talks with Copper Harbor historian Judy Davis about the unique history of Michigan's northern most area. Judy gives the Michigan Magazine crew a tour of her own private museum featuring many area artifacts.
NOVEMBER 1996
November 6th - SHOW #749: Barry visits the studios of Tracy Johnston in Chesaning . Tracy creates beautiful lamps, birdhouses and miniatures from stones she’s collected along the shores of the great lakes. Her part time hobby has now become a full time mail order business called "TREE HUGGER STONEWORKS."
Dell visits the Shelby Gemstone Factory in Shelby Michigan. The Gemstone factory is the worlds largest synthetic gemstone manufacturer. Here visitors can witness the creation of simulated Diamonds or Emeralds or lab-created Rubies and a rainbow of colored Sapphires.
November 13th - SHOW #750: Dell visits the home studio of Lynn and Ron Kovell near Millersburg Michigan. From the woods of northern Michigan the Kovells brings the process of "basket weaving" to a fine art. Beautiful one of a kind baskets are created by Lynn while her husband, Ron, busily prepares the wooden strips using his own unique process.
Barry ventures into the far reaches of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to visit with clothing designer Andrea Baldridge of Houghton. Andrea has turned her historic home into the world headquarters of "Distant Drums" designs. Distant Drums designs is Andreas "wearable art". Andrea relates to Michigan Magazine how her love of art and fabrics combined to create a world market for her and her one of a kind designs.
November 20th - SHOW #751: Barry visits historic Calumet to discover the incredible work of coppersmith Dave Walli.
Dell brings us the highlights of the 1996 Michigan Country Music induction ceremonies at the Saginaw County Fairgrounds . Also highlighted is Barry’s interview with TNN’s Bobby Randall, a Midland Michigan Native.
November 27th: SHOW #752: Dell visits "Slim’s Cafe" in the small UP community of Mohawk to taste their specialties that make owners Ed and Joanne the talk of the Upper Peninsula.
Barry visits realist artist Gordon Szczubelek of Mount Pleasant.
DECEMBER 1996
December 4th - SHOW #801: Barry visits Old Century Forge in Montigue Michigan, one of the world's largest hand crafted weathervane manufacturers. Barry tours plant operations with owner Tom Lougmiller.
Dell travels to Alpena to The Ludlow Packing Company to learn more about the re-introduction of the famous Krueger's Sausage. This quality German sausage was an area favorite back in the early part of this century and has only just recently been re introduced by permission of the Krueger family.
December 11th - SHOW #802: Dell visits with LJ Hawkins creator of "HAWKINS unique Rustic and Mosaic Art Furnishings". At LJ's home studio near Roscommon we watch and learn of the artists talent in creating beautiful furniture of mosaic twig work. LJ Hawkins is one of the very few artists in the country reviving this ancient craft that originated in the English Gardens of the late 1700's.
Barry discovers the fine dinning cuisine of the Embers restaurant in Mt. Pleasant . Here Barry, after touring the kitchen and seeing the chef's in action, is treated to the restaurants famous 1 pound pork chop by owner Jeff Tuma.
December 18th - SHOW #803: Barry travels to the Atlanta area to visit with talented outdoor portrait artist Jim Hublick.... Michigan Magazine then follows Jim to the Northwoods Gallery in Atlanta where Barry visits with owner John Dollar who takes us on a quick tour of his gallery that features the works of many Michigan artists.
Dell takes in Prarieville's Old Fashion Farm Days. This event draws thousands of traditional country music fans to the farm of Bill Aukerman north of Kalamazoo. Here nationally known artists as well as Michigan talent perform over a four day period. This is also the home of the Michigan Farmer's Hall of Fame.
December 25th - SHOW #804: Dell pays a return visit to the Swedish restaurant and gift shop known as "Punzel" near Buckley Michigan. Here Dell visits with owner Judy Hauser who announces her new line of wearable art. Original beautiful hand made fashions with a Scandinavian accent.
Barry boards the Grand Traverse Dinner train for a gourmet dinner while touring, aboard the renovated historic diesel train, the beautiful Grand Traverse area. Here aboard what is affectionately referred to as the "Choo-chew", co-owner Niel Klein tells the story of the dinner trains renovation and future while co-hosts Barry Stutesman and Dell Vaughan feast on garlic-roasted prime rib and roast whitefish with grilled shrimp.
