JANUARY 1995
January 4th - SHOW #601: Dell travels to the Black River area of Ironwood in Michigan's upper peninsula where he meets with talented potter Nancy Ramsey .
Then Barry heads to the Saginaw County fairgrounds for the induction of the newest members of the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame. Five new members are inducted this year.
January 11th - SHOW #602: Barry visits Kalamazoo’s first festival of the arts Allegro! The festival is designed to introduce the citizens of the area to the many artists who make this part of Michigan their home. It also gives those who might be interested in the fine arts a chance to experience many of them first hand.
Dell travels into the upper peninsula to Marquette to visit with Michigan Magazine writer Mikel B. Classen. Mikel tells us of the inspiration and unique stories that make writing about the upper peninsula such an exciting task.
January 18th - SHOW #603: Dell visits the Wild Fruit Pantry near Lupton Michigan. The Wild Fruit Pantry has developed and grown from a home based operation that features hand picked wild fruit that’s locally produced into jams, jellies and distributed nationally.
Barry visits The Pumpkin Farm near Standish. Here, the owners give free guided tours of a unique enchanted pumpkin farm to area schools and organizations.
January 24th - SHOW #604: Barry visits the historic Upper Peninsula community of Chassell and visits a unique herbal garden and shop called Einerlei.
Dell visits a young West Branch craftsman, Kirk Bedtelyon and his wife who have perfected the art of reproducing "Hoosier" style cabinets.
FEBRUARY 1995
February 1st - SHOW #605: Michigan Magazine visits Manistee County’s first "Tall Ship Festival".
February 8th SHOW #606: Barry visits with Paul Miller of Manistee the inventor of a new "board" game called PORTFOLIO. The Monopoly style game deals with the world of stocks and bonds.
Dell travels to Lupton Michigan and meets Sally Horton a pine cone artist. Sally creates beautiful wild life sculptures from the pine cones of area evergreens.
February 15th - SHOW #607: Dell travels to Traverse City to meet Bob Johnson who hand crafts beautiful wooden canoes and "ice" sail boats.
Then Barry travels to Wakefield in the Upper Peninsula where he’s treated to performances of area ethnic musical groups.
February 22nd SHOW #608: Dell and Barry head into the kitchen to share some old family recipes with the viewers! Dell prepares his mother’s old fashioned mouth watering buttermilk hitchhikes while Barry whips up a quick batch of wonderfully high calorie "no bake" chocolate cookies
MARCH 1995
March 1st - Show #609: Barry discovers the beautiful basket weaving ability of Copper Harbor craftsman Dennis Sotala. Dell visits with artist Pam Smith Bell of Suttons Bay. Pam is a unique and talented "rug hooker", creating beautiful hand made rugs at her Northwestern Michigan Farm.
March 8th - Show #610: Dell travels to Owosso to learn of the fascinating history and restoration of the old locomotive "1225". You'll see the old Pere Marquette Railway engine "fire up" as Dell climbs aboard to talk to Gary Knudsen, Vice President of Development of the restoration of the old "1225". Then Barry travels to Rochester where he discovers a unique all natural grain bakery called "The Breadwinner."
March 15th - Show #611: Barry travels to Harrisville to visit with Greg Boik an artist who creates beautiful furniture from the willow trees of northern Michigan. Dell travels to Detroit's "New Center" area to visit the historic Fisher building and Fisher theater.
March 22nd - Show #612: Dell visits with Terry Herald and Ed Wolfrum...The two men who were responsible for composing and recording the musical soundtrack for the PBS special AIR FORCE ONE. Barry visits an amazing artist in the Northport area who creates "Rock Critters". This artist transforms ordinary rocks and stones into life-like renderings of actual area wildlife.
March 29 - Show #613: Dell and Barry highlight some of the many Michigan restaurants and bakeries they have visited the past five years.
APRIL 1995
April 5th - Show #614: Dell visits with Jim Miller of Alpena. Jim has been handcrafting beautiful unique candles for over 20 years. This family business called SUNLIGHT CANDLES has created a popular nation wide mail order business for their candles from their small shop in down town Alpena.
Barry visits the Nelles Studio in Elk Rapids where he talks with artist and owner Scott Nelles. Scott creates from his minds eye unique brass sculptures from scratch. Scott tells us of the process from creating a plastic sculpture to the creation of the mold and pouring of the 2,000 degree molten brass into the molds to make beautiful renditions of his original sculpture.
April 12th - Show #615: Barry travels to Lansing where he visits with talented wood carvers Tom and Pat Schulte. This retired couple has amassed an impressive array of wood sculpted master pieces. Our visit includes a look at one of Tom's latest projects a sculpted bust of Mother Theresa.
Dell travels back to Northeastern lower Michigan to visit with Native American basketmaker Ben Shinos of Alpena . Ben, a full blooded Native American, demonstrates the craft that has been handed down through his family for generations.
April 19th - Show #616: Dell visits with award winning wild life artist Rod Lawrence of Kalakaska . Rod has won numerous art awards including an unprecedented double win for the 1995 MICHIGAN DUCK STAMP and the 1995 MICHIGAN TROUT STAMP......This makes Rod Lawrence the only artist to have won SEVEN Michigan stamp designs awards!...We visit the artist in action at his log cabin home in the hardwoods of northern Michigan , overlooking a branch of the Manistee River.
Barry travels to Ann Arbor to visit a unique Bed and Breakfast inn....or should we say a unique Bed and "Biscuits" inn....The establishment called "Classy Canines Bed and Biscuits" is dedicated to a unique alternative to the dog kennels of America...The Inn designed after the humans Bed and Breakfast concept, caters to the canine community, giving their masters a more homey alternative when deciding where to leave their pets while on vacation.
April 26th - Show #617: Barry travels to Flint to visit with a Genesee county quilting group. We talk with guild president Betty Lamb along with members from through out the area at the historic "Whaley Home" (a Michigan Historical land mark Victorian home built in the late 1850s) about the world of quilting.
Dell travels to Northwestern lower Michigan to visit with new artist Billie Erving of Kalkaska. Billie has developed a beautiful sketching style in her wild life renderings. Many of her sketchings have been donated to such worthy causes as Habitat for Humanities.
MAY 1995
May 3rd - SHOW #618: In this program Dell discovers the growing popularity of "Hot Air Ballooning" as he travels high over Holly Michigan on a sunrise flight!
Then Barry travels to Remus Michigan and "Dreamfield Farm". Here, children and adults are able to experience the simple charm of what it would be like living on a farm. From feeding the livestock to playing in the barn's hay loft.
May 10th - SHOW #619: Barry visits a 20 room Victorian mansion in Flint. Here we take a tour of the historic Whaley house. Within the homes aesthetic-styled structure remain many of the architectural features, furnishings and family heirlooms which vividly recaptures a part of Flint's fascinating past. The Whaley House is listed in the National Register of Historic Sites.
Then Dell visits Riecker's Outdoor Gallery in Traverse City. Riecker's features the works of some of Michigan's most talented artists and craftsmen.
May 17th - SHOW #620: Debbie Ladd of Lewiston prepares for Dell a favorite potato salad and a tuna salad. Recipes perfect for upcoming summer picnics and family get togethers. Have a pencil and paper ready for these delicious recipes!
Barry visits Native American Chief Leonard Isaac of the Bay City area. Chief Isaac reminisces with Barry and takes him on a tour of the Ogaukawning Indian Mission, the first church in present day Bay County. Established in 1847, now a Michigan Historical site...it served the Chippewa Indians at the nearby Kakawlin settlement.
May 24th - SHOW #621: Barry travels to Brighton for a visit with 29 year old Thomas Choate, owner and operator of the Felix Dental Co., a firm specializing in unique products for the dental industry. Tom tells us about his first non dental product that is making it's debut at giant retail chains across the country. The product is called "Poly-Bond" and soon could be sticking things together from coast to coast!
Next....As a child do you remember pedal cars? How about pedal planes?...Well , if you dreamed of having one when you were a child, the dream can become a reality....Dell travels to a Detroit area company, C & N Reproductions of Bloomfield Hills, where "limited edition" production has begun on making an exact reproductions in heavy gauge steel of the U.S. Army "PURSUIT" pedal plane...one of the most sought after pedal toys of the 1940s.
May 31st - SHOW #622: Dell's sweet tooth takes him to a unique fudge and candy company in Northeastern lower Michigan. Dell visits with the owners of "HOW SWEET IT IS!" as they whip up a batch of fresh chocolate fudge!
Then Barry visits with the Toth brothers of Hamburg Michigan. These two brothers, Ted and Stephen, have been "harvesting" wood from old barns since 1974. Recycling the wood into beautiful new floors, walls, and furniture. Collecting the quality wood from Michigan's abandoned barns for over 20 years the brothers have accumulated it into the state's largest antique lumber yard!
JUNE 1995
June 7th - Show #623: Barry visits an authentic turn of the century Finnish homestead in the U.P.'s Baraga County. The Hanka Homestead.
Dell continues our U.P. trek with a visit to Black River Pottery to witness the artistry of potter Nancy Ramsay.
June 14th - SHOW #624: Dell travels to Manistee to visit with wooden whistle maker Roger Bruchan. From his home Roger has created a national market for his hand crafted boat and train whistles. Roger's company is called Whistles Unlimited. From his home Roger designs, constructs, markets and distributes hundreds of whistles every year.
Barry visits with Michigan writer Rick Richards. From his Plymouth office Rick writes about the world of Michigan songwriters and singers for various national publications. We talk with Rick about the early days of Motown and the impact that Michigan music has had on the nation's music industry.
June 21st - SHOW #625: Barry travels to Michigan's Leelanau peninsula for a visit with Greek restaurant owner and Chef Sam Secson of Suttons Bay. At the restaurant called the Suttons Bay Hose House , because of it being housed in an old renovated turn of the century fire station, we sample some Greek house specialties.
Dell visits with master model ship maker Kenneth Jilbert of Manistee. Kenneth's home is accented with dozens of exact scale model replicas of many ships that have sailed the great lakes. We visit with Kenneth while he finishes up construction of his model of the sunken freighter Edmund Fitzgerald.
June 28th - SHOW #626: Dell visits Treesome Furniture Company of Traverse City. This Unique company produces beautiful hand crafted rustic furniture from Michigan White Cedar. Dell visits with the founders of the company who tell of the increasing popularity of their hand crafted custom furniture.
Barry travels to Comins Michigan to take in that area's first ever "Taste Fest". This area is rich in Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Local citizens meet at the area's Multi Purpose center to share with Michigan Magazine their favorite family recipes.
JULY 1995
July 5th - SHOW #627: Barry visits the world's largest crucifix at Indian River.
Dell fishes Lake Michigan with the author of the book "How to Catch More Fish Every Time", Capt. Michael Peel of Saugatuck. The book is a success guide to the Great Lakes and tributaries.
July 12th - SHOW #628: Dell travels to Chelsea Michigan and the world headquarters of the JIFFY MIX Company. Here we learn more about the beginnings of one of the country's more popular "pre-mix" corn meal and muffin companies.
Barry visits with grandfather clock maker John Crews of Metamora, Michigan. John constructs his clocks with all hand-made wooden gears from the woods of Michigan.
July 19th - SHOW #629: Barry visits with outdoor naturalist and writer, Jim Miller of Northeastern Lower Michigan. We visit Jim as he explains and demonstrates to an area school group the advantages of Michigan's great outdoors. We travel into the Michigan wilderness where Jim's demonstrations include creating a dwelling out of underbrush and rubbing two sticks together to make fire.
Dell discovers a place called Chestnut Hollow near Almont Michigan. Here amongst a quaint, restored, turn of the century ghost town, we find one of the largest antique bicycle collections in the United States. Owner Jerry Peters gives Dell a guided tour along with an opportunity to test-drive a rare bicycle.
July 26th - SHOW # 630: Dell visits an operating Buffalo farm near South Branch , Michigan. Dell talks with owner, rancher Earl Roe about the recent growth of popularity in turning to Buffalo farming in Michigan.
Barry visits Chelsea Michigan artist Susan Pickering Rothamel. Susan mixes ancient spiritual themes in colorful, contemporary designs. Susan's expressions are displayed through mixed-media collage, metalwork, enameling, oil painting, watercolor, pottery and weaving.
AUGUST '95
August 2nd - SHOW #631: Barry travels to Sparr Michigan to the "Bottle Cap" museum. Here we visit with owner Bill Hicks who gives us a tour of one of the largest collections of Coca Cola memorabilia in the nation.
Dell travels to the Wild Fruit Pantry in Lupton Michigan. Here four Michiganians have created a growing mail order business out of the wild fruit that grows in the hills of Northern Michigan.
August 9th - SHOW #632: Dell visits honey bee farmers Bob and Wilma Carriveau on their farm near Beaverton at Albright Shores. Here we learn more about the ancient business of "bee keeping" at the B&W Honey Farm.
Barry travels to Heartland Michigan to visit with Elvis "interpreter" Dann Vann. Danny has been presenting his "Salute to Elvis" since 1968 and has appeared throughout the U.S. as one of top Elvis impersonators. In 1991 Danny was inducted into the Elvis Impersonators International Hall of Fame.
August 16th - SHOW #633: Barry discovers "THE BURGER OF THE FUTURE" when he visits Ray Pleva of Cedar Michigan. Ray has developed a Hamburger that is 50% leaner than regular Hamburger. "Plevalean", as it's called, was awarded Michigan's New Product Award. The burger combines 91 percent lean beef with a natural cherry blend. The burger is gaining nation wide acceptance, even being introduced into the Michigan school lunch program this year!
Dell visits with Michigan author Willah Weddon of Stockbridge Michigan. Mrs. Weddon has authored many Michigan history related books. She was recognized by the Michigan Legislature and the Michigan Senate as having contributed a great deal to the written history of the state through her research and books about Michigan Governors and their life stories.
August 23rd - SHOW #634: Dell travels to the Con Foster historical museum in Traverse City to visit with antique lure collector George Richey of Honor Michigan. Dell talks with George about his new book called "MADE IN MICHIGAN FISHING LURES". This new book is a bonanza of angling history about those people who made Michigan's earliest fishing lures!
Barry travels to Clawson Michigan to visit with "Garden Artist" and stoneware sculptor Judy Reed. Judy's backyard garden is a whimsical display of her unique talent that incorporates living plants with her stoneware "garden art". Judy also explains how anyone can turn their back yard garden into a world of enchantment!
August 30th - SHOW #635: Michigan Magazine spends the day with the Vultures Soaring Club Of Michigan. Dell and Barry experience the excitement of actually soaring high above Michigan in these light motorless craft. The excitement begins with the actual pre-flight procedure and is highlighted by a 3,000 foot flight high above Fowlerville Michigan.
SEPTEMBER 1995
September 6th - SHOW #636: Dell travels to Holland, Michigan to visit guitar maker Del Langejans. Del has hand-crafted hundreds of guitars from his Holland workshop. Providing instruments for celebrities like...country entertainers Tom Bresh and Jerry Reed...Christian guitarist John Michael Talbot and many more.
Barry travels to the Clare area to visit with photographer Conrad Larson. Conrad has spent many years among the Amish, capturing candid moments of their life on film.
September 13th - SHOW #637: Barry travels to Suttons Bay to take in the "Senior Fair" sponsored by the Leelanau Commission on Aging/ Here we discover the many health services available to older citizens of Michigan. From the arts to the many health services and support groups, we discover a rainbow of opportunities opening up for the growing population of Senior Citizens.
Dell travels to Portland, Michigan to visit a couple who have devoted their life to growing and cultivating Michigan wildflowers for distribution. Their operation has become one of the largest wildflower seed companies in the Midwest.
September 20th - SHOW #638: Dell and Barry take in a couple of popular family attractions in the southern part of Michigan. First it's off to the Michigan Family Pet Show in Sterling Heights Michigan...Here pets from the common to the exotic are on display with seminars and demonstrations conducted on proper care of the family pet.
Then it's off to Stage Coach Stop, USA, located in Michigan's Irish Hills. These ghost town theme park provides a world of family fun for Dell and Barry. From blacksmiths to old west gunfights on the main street, we take in one of Southern Michigan's more popular tourist attractions.
September 27th - SHOW #639: Dell and Barry take in the activities of the Northwoods Reservation Boy Scout camp near Lupton, Michigan. Hundreds of scouts from the Lansing area converge on this camp annually for countless scouting activities and merit badge earning opportunities. We follow the scouts and their leaders deep into the Northern Michigan wilderness for a week of scouting.
OCTOBER 1995
October 4th - SHOW # 640: Barry visits the "Pumpkin Farm" near Standish. Here, the owners give free guided tours of a unique, enchanted pumpkin farm to area schools and organizations.
Dell's sweet tooth takes him to a unique fudge factory and candy company in northwestern lower Michigan. Dell visits with the owners of "How Sweet it Is!" as they whip up a batch of fresh chocolate fudge!
October 11th - SHOW #641: Dell visits "Treesome" furniture of Traverse City . Here the owners explain their unique concept of creating from the woods of Northern Michigan beautiful rustic furniture.
Barry visits with the Penrose family of West Branch. This family of four combined their unique talents to author an informative and practical traveler's guide to the 116 Michigan lighthouses and 199 Michigan waterfalls.
October 18th - SHOW #642: Barry visits with "collage" artist Susan Pickering Rothemel of Chesaning.
Dell travels to "Sonlight Candles" of Alpena to witness the carving artistry of Jim Miller and his staff.
October 25th - SHOW #643: Dell visits two "Loon Rangers". One from the Upper Peninsula and one from the Lower Peninsula. Here we witness, up close, the results of local Loon protection and preservation efforts.
Barry witnesses restoration of Bay County's historic Indian mission near Kawakwkin.
