SHOW # 344 - First aired August of 1993
Barry investigates the mysterious "Paulding Lights", one of Michigan's unsolved mysteries. The Michigan Magazine crew actually catches, on video, these mysterious spheres of light that dance in the sky in a remote section of Upper Peninsula wilderness.
Then Dell discovers the unique and colorful history of Wakefield, Michigan. Michigan Magazine visits the area historical museum to visit with area towns people who tell of the proud and fascinating past of one of the U.P.'s western most communities.
JANUARY 1994
January 5th - SHOW #501: Barry’s Journey continues into the world of Michigan’s public libraries by visiting "The Library of Michigan" in Lansing. Deputy State Librarian Jeffery Johnson takes us on a personal guided tour of the many services available to the public.
Dell travels to the Rifle River Recreation area near Lupton and talks with Park Manager John Lucas of the State Department of Natural Resources. Here we discover a prime example of one of the state’s more diverse well kept parks!
January 12th - SHOW #502: Dell goes blueberry picking at Montrose Orchards. We visit with berry farmer Don Hill and talk about the many varieties of berry’s available in the state and the growing popularity of Michigan families traveling to the "pick your own" fruit farms which are plentiful in this great lake state!
Barry travels to the Wolverine area to discover the unique "Mole in The Ground" studio. Here musical instruments of centuries ago, like the "dulcimer" and the "sweetstick", are still made by hand by two local craftsmen.
January 19th - SHOW #503: Barry travels into the backwoods of northern Michigan’s Vanderbilt area to visit a family that has given up all modern conveniences of the day to live deep in the Michigan wilderness in a log cabin hand built by themselves. Here "Sneaky Peat", his wife and three children live off the land venturing into town on occasion to make music at local fairs or to record an occasional album of original tunes. Here we spend the day living "The good life" and "makin’ music!"
Dell travels to Owosso to lean of the fascinating restoration of the old locomotive "1225" by the "Michigan State Trust For Railway Preservation Inc." You’ll see the old Pere Marquette Railway Engine "fire up" and ride the rails once again as Dell climbs aboard to talk to Gary Knudsen, Vice President of Development of the restoration of "Old 1225".
January 26th - SHOW #504: Dell travels to Lansing to the home of world famous "Lorann Oils". As Dell steps through the doors of the Lorann Oils office on Aurelius road you’ll be taken back to your childhood...to the days of pulling taffy and making rock candy during the holidays. Here is where that famous small bottle of flavoring is manufactured. Dell visits with production manager Erban Brown.
Then Barry travels to "Sherni’s " home made candies in Whittimore where those Lorann oils are put to good use! Here the husband and wife candy makers are known for their delicious chocolates but treat Barry to a pleasant yet most delicious alternative...a giant batch of hand made peanut brittle-mmmmm!
FEBRUARY 1994
February 2nd - SHOW #505: Dell visits with Sandra Clark, Director of the Bureau of Michigan History. Then takes a guided tour of the impressive Michigan Museum of History in Lansing with Chris Dancisak, Marketing Coordinator for the Bureau of Michigan History.
Barry travels to Gladwin to visit artists Jim and Roma Forgie. Jim is an accomplished wooden bird carver, specializing in working and decorative decoys and Roma is a wildlife artist specializing in the birds of Michigan in paintings and pastels.
February 9th - SHOW #506: Barry travels to Harrisville to visit with Greg Boik, an artist who creates beautiful furniture from the Willow tree.
Dell travels to Swartz Creek to visit with Kathy Ridley who collects and builds miniatures. Her collection is known for it’s minute detail.
February 16th - SHOW #507: Dell visits the set of "The Ted Johnson Show". A popular public access television show originating from Flint Michigan. Dell explores the popularity of this show and that of public access.
Barry travels to Mt. Pleasant to talk to radio personality Jim Sommerville, the host of radio station WCEN’s popular local show called "Backyard Bootleg". The show features the music and talent of local artists.
February 23rd - SHOW #508: Barry visits with Bill Penrose of West Branch , author of informative books on the lighthouses and waterfalls of Michigan including a concise travelers guide (including specific directions) to 116 Michigan Lighthouses and a guide to 199 Michigan waterfalls.
Dell travels to Flushing to talk with clock maker Rick Gillis. Rick’s clock making is called "fretwork" which became popular back in the 1800s. Rick is reportedly the only person in Michigan who still does this type of clock making.
MARCH 1994
March 2nd - SHOW #509: Dell travels to Honor Michigan to visit with outdoor writer and Michigan bait maker George Richey.
Barry visits the world headquarters of the Dick E Bird News in Acme Michigan. The newspaper is dedicated to the world of bird feeding. Published monthly by a husband and wife team and sent to over 10,000 subscribers around the world!
March 9th - SHOW #510: Barry discovers the world of Michigan snowmobiling. The Michigan Magazine crew takes a guided tour of the impressive Jordan Valley State Groomed Trail near Gaylord.
Dell travels to Wakefield in Michigan’s western most reaches of the Upper Peninsula to talk with area artist Garland Miller who creates tables, bowls and other items from the burls of trees. Dell also learns of other points of interest that make this part of the state one of the most unique.
March 16th - SHOW #511: Dell visits the UP’s Garden Peninsula and Fayette State Park.
Barry takes in the Northern Michigan Relief Auction in Fairview.
March 23rd - SHOW #512: Barry visits with Michigan Photographer Randy McCune of Petoskey.
Dell explores the Soo Locks at Sault Ste.Marie and discovers the fascinating history of this gateway to Lake Superior.
March 30th - SHOW #513: Dell discovers the overwhelming popularity of quilting in the state of Michigan. Highlights include interview with Kathy Zeilinger of the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill, Kay Wood of the PBS television series Quilting for the 90s and pictorial quilter Jackie Trute of Ravenna.
Barry travels to the Upper Peninsula community of Paulding to Explore one of Michigan’s unsolved mysteries, the "Paulding Lights". Here we witness for the first time the actual spheres of light as they dance on the horizon!
APRIL 1994
April 6th - SHOW #514: It’s Maple syrup time! Michigan Magazine travels first to an actual maple syrup processing farm in Ogemaw County to observe, along with the fifth grade class of St. Joseph Elementary School of West Branch , the process from tapping the Maple trees to bottling the rich Maple syrup for distribution. Then we travel to the big Maple Syrup Festival in Shepherd Michigan!
April 13th - SHOW #515: Dell travels to one of the largest RV shows in the state. The Detroit RV and Camper Show at the Novi Expo Center in Novi Michigan. Dell visits with Howard Monson, past President of the Michigan Association of Recreational Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC) , and Maureen Paschke, Public Relations Rep for MARVAC.
Then Barry visits with the Sixth Gate Cloggers of Novi who demonstrate the uniqueness of this American Folk Dance.......and even convince Barry to try his hand at clogging on stage at the Novi Expo Center!
April 20th - SHOW #516: Barry learns more about the many arts and crafts available for the serious craftsmen and part time hobbyists by visiting an area arts and crafts outlet and teaching center in Clio.
Dell travels to Au Sable Michigan where he visits with Chief Everlasting Thunder and Fox Lady who prepare a Native American meal of fried bread, black rice and corn soup.
April 27th - SHOW #517: Dell visits a new museum that honors the history of American scouts, The Scouting Museum in Washington Michigan. Dell visits with John Dyer-Hurdon who began the scouting museum from his own collection of scouting items and those of friends in scouting.
Barry visits with artist John Sullivan of Mount Morris who creates beautiful wild life etchings in glassware.
MAY 1994
May 4TH - SHOW #518: We travel to Rochester, Michigan where Barry discovers a unique all natural grain Bakery called "the bread winner". This family operation began in Mt. Pleasant back in 1982 and since that time the Jaroch family has been baking a wide variety of natural Grain breads, muffins, cookies and specialty items all by hand!
Then Dell travels to Branch, Michigan to witness the artistry of a sister and brother team who create beautiful hand-crafted and hand painted decorative tiles at their Studio called "Sweet Water Tile and Pottery".
May 11th - SHOW #519: Dell travels to Fairview to visit with Tom and Pam Voth, who share with us a Russian Mennonite ethnic dish. While Pam puts the final touches on the meal we visit with Tom About his unique "fly tying" talent.
Barry travels to St. Helen to witness the incredible wood burning talent of Linda Sales who has created masterful life like portraits in wood for celebrities such as Popular circus clown Emmet Kelly Jr. , Johnny Carson and Michael Landon.
May 18th - SHOW #520: Barry discovers a unique museum in Montrose, Michigan dedicated to the history and legacy of the American telephone. Here we travel back in time to the 1800s through to The present days of modern communication.
Dell travels to the "Palace" of Auburn Hills, Michigan to talk with popular outdoor Author Tom Huggler about the many fishing guides he's written and the popularity of fishing Michigan’s lakes and streams.
May 25th - SHOW #521: We travel to Lansing to the transportation department where Dell visits the "mapping section" and discovers how our Michigan travel maps are created and Produced.
Barry visits with John T. Nicholas of Howell, Michigan and discovers this man's talent of creating and reproducing carousel and rocking horses by hand carving them out of area wood.
JUNE 1994
June 1st - SHOW #522: We travel to Flint where Barry talks with Gary Mcdaniels who is an accomplished scale model maker. Gary has created scale model renditions of Flint historical landmarks.
Dell travels to the Palace of Auburn Hills and the Greater Detroit Area Sportfishing Show. Here he receives a guided tour by award winning outdoor writer Tom Huggler.
June 8th - SHOW #523: Dell visits Lupton's Rifle River Recreation Area to visit with John Lucas of the DNR where he explains this unique recreation area and it's growing popularity.
Barry travels to the Muskegon area to board the U.S.S. Silversides, an actual World War II submarine now turned museum. The U.S.S. Silversides ranks third highest among all World War II subs for enemy encounters.
June 15th - SHOW #524: Dell travels to Ravenna to talk with Michigan Magazine columnist Jackie Trute. Jackie is a Civil War re-enactment enthusiast and demonstrates her skill of creating reproductions of Civil War uniforms and prepares a Civil War dinner for the Michigan Magazine crew.
Barry travels to Oxford Michigan and discovers the world of neon lightening at the Blue Neon. Here custom neon lights are created from concept to installation for customers throughout the country.
June 22nd - SHOW #525: Barry returns to Oxford to visit Williams art glass studio where a husband and wife team , Richard and Karen Williams, produced wonderful art by creating custom art glass windows and doors. Richard creates custom beveled glass windows and Doors while Karen has mastered the art of glass etchings.
Dell travels to Argentine Michigan to visit one of the last operating grist mills in the state. Dell visits with owner Frank Wolcott.
June 28th - SHOW #526: Dell visits American Sound and Video of Warren , Michigan. Dell visits with vice President of Manufacturing, Paul Hayes and Sales Manager, Don Armstrong where we learn of the process of mass producing video and audio cassettes.
Barry travels to Rosebush to visit with dance instructor Carol Howard. Carol instructs elementary school children throughout the state on traditional dances. On this segment we watch carol in action with the Rosebush third grade class.
JULY 1994
July 6th - SHOW #527: Barry travels to Onekama to visit with Maltese cookbook author Mary Buttigieg. We get a chance to taste a few of this unique Mediterranean island’s dishes along with preparation tips.
Dell visits with Terry Herald and Ed Wolfrum. These two Detroit area men are responsible for composing and recording the musical sound track of the PBS special "Airforce One". Highlights include a behind the scenes look at the actual recording of the award winning scores within the walls of the sanctuary of a Detroit area church!
July 13th - SHOW #528: Dell travels to McTaggerts of Standish to learn more about the world of screenprinting and how Michigan Magazine shirts, hats and tote bags are produced.
Barry travels to Clare to visit with professional photographer Conrad Larson. Conrad specializes in rare candid shot of the Amish.
July 20th SHOW #529: Barry travels to Remus, Michigan and "Dreamfield Farms". Here children and adults are able to experience the simple charm of what it would be like living on a farm. From feeding the livestock to playing in the barnā€s hay loft.
We then travel to Northport, Michigan in the northwestern part of the state where Dell climbs aboard the tall ship Manitou....a 114 foot schooner fashioned after the ships that sailed the great lakes over 100 years ago. Here we talk to Captain Dave and his crew about their unique "schoolship" cruises. On these cruises school children from throughout the state are taken out on Lake Michigan for a hands on experience. The children learn through various experiments about the ecology of the great lakes.
July 17th SHOW #530: Dell again climbs aboard the tall ship Manitou...This time with the Mills Schools fourth grade class of Midland, Michigan to experience a unique schoolship cruise on Lake Michigan.
Barry visits with author/photographer John L. Wagner of the Lansing area. John has written and published the book "MICHIGAN LIGHTHOUSES...AN AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVE". Michigan Magazine climbs aboard his single engine plane to cruise some of the lighthouses he’s captured in photos from this unique perspective. Utilizing an intensive color separation process John has captured on film some of the most breathtaking aerial photographs ever taken of great lakes lighthouses!
AUGUST 1994
August 3rd - SHOW #531: Barry travels to Grand Haven to visit with award winning outdoor photographer Larry Dech. Larry also gives us tips on creating a "backyard" wild life sanctuary.
Dell visits an authentic German restaurant in Stockbridge. Here the Kaczmarek Family treats us to a "behind the scenes" look at their bakery and sausage house....and A taste of authentic German cuisine
August 10th - SHOW #532: Dell discovers the growing popularity of "hot air ballooning" as he travels high over Holly, Michigan on a sunrise flight!
Barry visits the Ginseng and Golden Seal garden of Steve Edwards. Steve is one of the only commercial growers of these "miracle" plants in the state. We discuss the wonderful properties of these rare plants at his northwest Michigan home.
August 17th - SHOW #533: Barry travels to downtown Detroit for the city's annual "taste fest". Gourmet restaurants from throughout Detroit demonstrate their culinary skills on the streets of the city for the general public to sample.
